Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), Mac OS X (10.7.4)

    Hi DCNY69 and all

I would like to point out to everyone that going through the replacement process with Apple is not an easy thing , most of their engineers just look surprised and and reply : We never heard about this issue before

    Right........

There are few things that can be done.

. First log a call with the apple technical support , and try to speak to 2nd or 3rd line support

. Get a case ref and point the engineers to check this support page , the thread number is : 4034848

. once that has been confirmed , take few pictures with an iphone or camera , take video all kind of stuff.

. book a time with apple store and stress the computer 2-3 days before , don't shut down the laptop when it happens just take it as it is to the genious bar ..

I hope this will help some of you , I got my laptop replaced yesterday , Samsung panel and things seems much better than before.  brightness with samsung is fantastic.

    using 40 % on samsung LCD = 100 % with LG

    cheers

    ebbbbbb.jpg

Samsung panel with 50% brightness ,,,,,,,Stunning ........

    My pleasure

    Stress testing ,

to run many applications or one particular test against the issue , for example

if you have bad hard drives you stress test them by having lots of read/write io

in our instance , we need to stress the graphics for the machine to work harder for it to ghost …..normally i run virtual machines or graphic testing like heaven (see above picture)

I have a day one rMBP and while I did see the issue the 1st time I used it, I guess I changed the wallpaper and didn't notice it again until today when I made my wallpaper a solid color.

Image retention is severe and I also seem to have small white patches that have now shown up. I'll be contacting Apple tomorrow to see what can be done.

Thank you again. OK I understand now.

Now, do you think it would make a difference if it's connected to the power or it's on battery? Someone told me that the machine switches graphics card when on battery and that make aggravate the problem.

Well, just that you don't see it with a different wallpaper does not mean it is ok.

    Exchange that machine ASAP.

    Good luck.

No, I have graphics switching always switched off. Makes no difference to the issue. It's still severe.

Well ,I have managed to get this issue couple of times now to prove it to Apple so I can give my advice

-Graphic Auto switching needs to be turned on.   ( the issue occurs when the graphics switch between nvidia to Intel )  so basically you need to run something heavy for it to switch to nvidia then back to intel

    -  AC powered because you need to leave it for a long time

    - I found virutal machines are the best ( just install virtualbox  www.virtualbox.org )  run few windows instances or linux(with gnome )

    - Photoshop CS 5

    - heaven after full benchmark

Quick update of faulty or perfect display stats:

    LG week unknown (7x)

    LG week 23

    LG week 26 (2x)

    LG week 29 (2x)

    LG week 30

    LG week 31

    LG week 32 (2x)

    LG week 33

    Unknown week 24

    LG week unknown

    LG week 26 (3x)

    LG week 29

    LG week 33 (2x)

    Samsung week unknown (2x)

    Samsung week 30 (2x)

    Samsung week 32

    Samsung week 33

Find out your build week: http://www.appleserialnumberinfo.com/Desktop/index.php Put the serial in the top left corner bar

Find out your display manufacturer: Open Terminal, copy & paste:

    ioreg -lw0 | grep \"EDID\" | sed "/[^<]*</s///" | xxd -p -r | strings -6

and then press Enter. If the result starts with LP it's an LG, if it starts with LSN it's a Samsung.

You had to stress your display so hard to get IR? If so, then your rMBP is not faulty at all!

Mine just needs to stay on this very same forum page for 5 minutes to replicate the IR problem. Simple as that...

LG display, no sign of IR yet after 3 weeks of ownership.

The URL's provided to establish the build week number do not seem to like my serial number. do I need to truncate the 12 character serial number found in "about my mac" in order for the sites to confirm the build details?

    2.7/16/756

No, it should work with the full 12 digit serial. Try this link, too: http://www.chipmunk.nl/klantenservice/applemodel.html

Even that website reports "We are sorry but we don't have any information on this model yet. "
