Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

Argyll definitely looks smoother and the price is right.

I'm wondering if there is any hardware difference at all between Pro and Elite.  I see the ambient sensor differentiates the Express.  It wouldn't surprise me if it's all in software and the same goes for the ability to do TVs.

It would be great if the Express can do everything except the ambient with the right software!  Please keep me posted.

I have not had IR yet but was wondering if using a screen saver from now on may help in preventing IR from happening later? I have disabled the screen saver function on my 15" MacBook Pro Retina late 2013.

Oh man I thought screen savers are a thing of the past and only kept as some kind of reminiscence to the good old times when it was deemed useful 25 years ago at at time when I was a boy.

     - Open web browser, with blank white screen, for 1-2 minutes

     - Swipe over into Dashboard

You can _clearly_ see the IR echo against the checkered background of Dashboard.

If they still don't acknowledge the problem, escalate to a manager -- your Genius is brain-dead.

So they are still putting junk LG displays into the new late 2013 machines?  Do they still have IR or now it's color cast? 

When I placed them side by side and showed the "genius", he played dumb and said that my screen looked brighter/better which was obviously his way of saying that he doesn't care about finding a solution to my problem. The difference in the displays is literally night and day. One thing that I thought was curious was that all of the 15" Retinas ondisplay had Samsung panels and only one of them had a yellowish display. The rest had brilliant neutral whites and colors that really popped. The second "genius" said that the screen is within Apple spec and display variances are acceptable to Apple. I understand that small differences in displays are going to be expected but my display literally looks like refurbished crap when compared to the display models. My original display had brilliant color but unfortunately had severe IR. Apple still has my laptop to run "tests" on it to determine if the screen is in spec. I have been without a laptop for nearly a week. I am not going to give in until Apple replaces my Retina with a different one as I don't have the time to screw around with repeated screen replacements.

You should ask them to give you more specifics about their spec for color balance. How do they know your screen is within spec? Do they measure it? What do they compare it to? I think it's silly for them to say it's within spec without actually saying what that spec is or how they determine if your display is within that spec.

I've been told the same thing: the yellowint is with specification. But you didn't agree to buy a yellowed display; you agreed to buy the first display with image retention and now you want a replacement that looks reasonably similar.

And I want to point out that a brand new machine can also have a yellow-tinted display, not just the replacement displays. I know because I'm on one now.

It’s probably not going to look great on screen other then my own, but who knows. I have a 2012 15” rMBP with Yellow Tint Samsung Screen.

This is great. Thanks! I've been using the pofile posted here and it's quite good. More pink than the one the Spyder4 app did but I feel like the greys look more neutral in general. My results with dispcalGUI and my Spyder4Pro haven't been nearly as good. Could you screenshot the options you checked?

So, in other words, should I be happy for having a display with image retention? Or is there a third option like a display with has neither image retention nor yellow tint?

I'm confused... don't know if I should ask for a replacement as things can get worse...

no, you shouldn't be happy for having a display w/ image retention.  not at all.  why should you?  these notebooks are relatively expensive and so i expect a premium product.  i went through 3 in 7 days and returned all of them for various quality issues.

from what i've read on these forums for the past 12 months, things WILL get worse...

if apple is going to produce rMBPs w/ creaking cases, image retention, short battery life, then the rMBPs should cost half their current price.

I hope it wasn't just a fluke, and you can get good results from those settings too. When I did the calibration I set the backlight to 50% and turned off the auto adjust feature in the settings. I also turned off screen and idles sleep in the settings. I would recommend doing the calibration in a dark room (like a closet), so light bleeding through the apple logo does not interfere with the results.

Under instrument in the screenshot you should see Spyder4, but since nothing was plugged in when I took the screenshot, it’s blank. That’s all I can remember, hopefully it helps.

I don't think escalating to a manager helps at all in this case, I did that and got nowhere. Apple are playing hardball on this, which makes me think that they cannot just send these parts back to the manufacturer like they do in other cases. It's almost as if Apple themselves are footing the bill for these screens, and the staff have been told not to accept returns. Maybe with the screens being cutting edge tech at the time of release, the returns part of the supplier contract isn't that great for Apple.

Either way, customers currently own this problem, not LG or Apple.

The fact that the current LG screen has had a part number change from the one originally fitted makes it clear that there were issues, but that doesn't seem to matter either.

15" Haswell update:     It's been two months now with no IR or color tint or backlight issues.  The screen is LG:  LP154WT1-SJE1     Brightness is not quite as bright as my 17" 2010 MBP, but this was by design as pointed out by early reviwers of the first retina MBP's.
