It is ashame that I must return to this forum. Allow me to add to the stories about the Macbook Pro Retina 15.4'' Mid-2012.
I am now in my final year as an engineering student and I bought this computer going into my junior year because I would need the additional horsepower over my aging Dell (7-8 years old at the time).
So doing some research on PCs, I was discouraged by feedback from several companies, although I had some nice models selected. I am a huge convert to Apple which really started with the iPhone 3G. This macbook was my first and completed my switch to Apple products. I paid roughly 2300 for this laptop before taxes, with the education discount. I have been hugely impressed with it..... Not really anymore.
About a week ago, I noticed IR with my display. I was well aware of the IR issues people were having; however, I talked to an Apple sales rep and was encouraged that Apple was well aware of any issues and would take care of their products. I checked my laptop for the screen maker when I first got it, it was an LG. No issues what so ever until a week ago (probably has been an issue for about 2-3 months but I did not notice it until last week). So of course, I am very upset that my expensive laptop couldn't even last 18-24 months without an issue. I elected not to get AppleCare because for 2300, I figured 5 years is a safe bet. WRONG. Now I have spent 3 phone calls, 3 chats (online), and 1 Apple store visit later..... forking over 360 bucks for a screen that should not have been sold to me in the first place. I tried very hard to stress how this is an issue that Apple knew about walking out the door. How I told that sales rep that I was concerned of this issue. I should have listened to those on this forum warning me to wait, unfortunately, waiting was not an option (classes were starting). Additionally, for 360, I have major concerns that this will be reoccuring. The repair is a 90 day warranty, Apple has no policies to support longer warranties. So I will spend 360 and I expect to see the issue again.
Sadly, this experience is looking to push me back to the PC market because my future Macbook (and likely iPad) purchases are based on the experience I get from this Macbook. I have guilded a lot of people to buy Apple products because of the quality. However, I have lost a lot of confidence in Apple over this Macbook. It is a real shame too, it was an amazing experience.
I would NOT recommend the Macbook Pros to anyone at the current moment based off of the experiences with the mid-2012s. I am not sure how the 2013s are but I have NO confidence in Apple's computers at the current moment. Just wish Apple would stand by their products better. If it was the any other hardware that broke, I'd believe it was just what typically goes wrong, but I knew this issue when I bought it. I guess I will actually need to start buying AppleCare (never needed an extended warranty with Dell laptops).
