Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), Mac OS X (10.7.4)

Does the Samsung produce more vibrant and richer colors?

Yellowing and tinting can affect both Samsung and LG. I've seen yellow Samsungs and LGs and I've seen white Samsungs and LGs. It's really a per-unit problem.

so far so good.  it's an LG screen (A019) but color looks uniform. very fast and great battery life (~8hrs) listening to pandora and surfing in safari.

the palm rests are smooth like the rest of the case

    not much creaking

    no yellow tint

    not dim

only gripe so far is that i lost my favorite desktop backgrounds b/c i did a fresh install (didn't do time machine).  i don't have "Nature" and "plants" categories in desktop backgrounds.

this laptop had no blemishes whatsoever unlike the previous 3.  on the previous rMBPs, the power port and/or usb ports looked like they some marks in them.  for example in the power port, looks like minor burn marks.  this one was clean.  very pristine condition.

and no object sticking out of the air vent unlike the other one

crossing fingers this one is a keeper...

Well I regret not sending it into apple under the first year's free warranty. It's only gotten worse over time as I expected:

Unfortunately I don't drive and live about 8 hours away from an Apple store. I will make note if I do manage to get out of town to take it in. I've never "imaged" a mac before. Is there Acronis for mac? I assume if I get it exchanged they can't transfer the drive.

Buy an external USB hard drive and use Time Machine to back up your hard drive. Then use Migration Assistant to restore to a new machine. I hope you don't end up paying $600 to replace the display and get a display with other problems like yellow tinting. :-/

Ah there's no way I'd pay for it, I'd try getting it for free. In regards to backup, I'd prefer just an image solution so all my apps and preferences come with it. I do have a NAS and some HDD's + enclosure but I'm not up to formatting any of them for time machine, I could just manually backup stuff I guess. Maybe I'll just live with it if they don't replace it for free.

Ya I was at the Apple store today they told me to come back after christmas day so they can do a thorough diagnose to figure out exactly what is going on. But now thinking about it, i should've asked them to exchange me a brand new one as i only got this like 4 days ago. IT is clearly a fulty display and i dont know how i would feel if they just fixed the panel itself leaving me a machine thats been serviced pretty much out of the box. I paid for a brand new machine not a refurbished. I dont know how i should feel or deal with apple on this kind of issue.

Just return it. If they replace your display because of the green gradient they might give you a yellow tinted display and you might end your opportunity for exchanges or returns. Just keep returning, or exchanging, until you're satisfied. People on Mac Rumors go through 5 machines before they keep one. It's a shame that we have to do that but Apple sells defective products and we have to return them until we get one that isn't broken.

    Backup

For backup solutions, try Carbon Copy Cloner (CCC). It images the entire drive, you can even boot directly from your backup. It takes about 2 hour (300GB) to backup and restore to a new computer. When you turn on your restored computer, it's like nothing happened.

    Yellow Tint Issue

Ok, so I was able to confirm it on 2 machines now. If you have even yellow tint, but Spyder4Express (the express will do it, no need for pro) and use Argyll Software to calibrate it. You will be very happy! I am! And I am very picky

For best results, if you are not working with prints, and looks are more important than color accuracy, calibrate the screen to about 6700K temperature. I compared with older MacBooks, and most "normal" MacBooks are calibrated to 6700-6800K, not the more industry standard temprture of 6500K. Any way, if you are interested, look for my writeup on how to do it several responses back. It really works, well at least for me. This is just to confirm that Spyder4Express works well with Argyll.

If there is significant interest, I can try to do a screencast video after the holidays about how to do this, but it’s very simple.

Nobody should be accepting image persistance on these screens - in warranty or out.  They're defective plain and simple, end of story.  Some displays have it, some don't.  Other IPS displays from Apple as well as other manufacturers do not have this.  This should have been a recall situation.

If they are screwing you with this (like they have been me so far) you need to do a full assault of BBB complaints, contacting consumer watch dogs, FTC, credit card dispute (if possible) and an executive e-mail carpet bomb to Apple.  This is beyond reprehensible.

My computer has other problems in addition to display burn in and it has been repaired 3 times (now on it's 4th logic board) and they are still refusing to replace it or refund me - and it's under the original 1 year warranty.

Were you able to determine if using the spyder express with Argyll removes the single monitor limitation the Spyder Express claims to have but the pro and elite claim to be able to do?

    Thanks.

    brsm1990,

I can't say with 100% certainty, but I am pretty sure the answer is yes, it can do multiple monitors. I did not even activate the Spyder4Express software, I just installed it for the drivers, and used Argyll for the rest. I can set custom color temp and gamma even though Spyder4Express is supposed to be limited to 6500k and 2.2 gamma only. Now way to test for sure till I get back home after the holidays, but the option is there, so I would say yes with 99% certainty.

As for your repair history, are you in California by chance? If so, Apple has to buy your computer back for full price. Under the CA Lemon Law, if the manufacturer attempts and fails to fully repair a product while it’s under warranty, they have to purchase it back from the customer. There are similar laws in other states, look into it. Usually, a properly worded demand letter from an attorney to Apple’s legal department will do the trick. If you have an attorney friend, ask them to write it. If not, write it your self and send it via registered mail. Refer to your states lemon law statute. You should get a result quickly.
