Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

Trying but Apple gives me nothing but contempt.

I have also tried the extended warranty through the credit card route but they are denying it because it's still under the manufacturer's warranty!

As a word of warning to anyone going to the genius bar for a replacement of the screen, or anything else. Wipe your drive first. There have been several stories of genius bar employees ripping hard drives of machines they are repairing and then going through the files.

My rMBP passed all tests so I needed showing the problem to the technicians. They'll ask Apple for a replacement after taking pictures of my screen. Hopefully I won't get another defective one nor yellowish. By the way, I'm unsure if the yellow tint is really an issue or its a matter of personal preference. I think the yellow tint is only a problem if it's not uniform, otherwise you can calibrate yourself and get better tones (but perhaps less brightness).

No, no you can't calibrate it. I've tried. Yeah you can reduce the yellow but the colours won't look right; and you can move the white point up but that just makes the whites blue which isn't what you want either. The whites just won't be white; they'll be any random colour but white. If you get a yellow replacement go ahead and try to calibrate it and tell us if it looks in any sense as good as the one you have now.

My looks perfect after calibration, and I am very picky. You need to use a hardware color calibrator. I used Spyder4 + Argyll software. If you go back a few posts back, you can see screenshot comparisons.

You can NOT calibrate the screen using the built in software, because it does not allow for proper curve adjustment. But with $80 calibrator and 2 hours of computer time you'll have a great looking screen. I'll post some better before and after shots once I get back home and use my DSLR.

The only issue here is, Apple should either supply a spider 4 with the purchase of a MBPr, or tell the display vendor what they are supplying is woefully inadequate.

brsm, contact apples customer relations department and explain to them the matter.  Heck, reference this thread, not that they will read it, but at 600 pages long, I'd venture it's not a small issue. But the other option is have your CC company dispute the charge with Apple.  They know how to manage things with large companies and might have better success.  It's dumb to have to do these kinds of things, particularily when sometimes Apple just says it's completely unacceptable and fixes the issues and other times does the exact opposite.  You might also try another store.

I'm waiting until the holiday shipping mess dies down a bit and will try and buy one of these new machines fully loaded with a 1TB drive.  If it doesn't fit the bill, I'm not keeping it.  And it's advice everyone should adhere to.  I think with a large supply of devices being returned Apple might catch on it's not profitable to keep their current course.

x0054 would be so kind and post your current display profile here for the rest of us to use?

so i just returned my 4th rMBP (the one i got from best buy).  it was an LG display and an October build (serial no L). That makes 4 returned rMBPs in a month. I asked the sales rep to find a higher serial number but he said he checked all 9 in the back which had serial number "L".

Just going to wait probably until Feb/Mar

What was the reason for the return? Image retention?

I get a kick whenever someone references my spreadsheet in here & MR forums

This was intended to help those buying a new unit or exchanging a unit at a physical store (Apple, Best Buy) to ensure you're getting a "fresh" unit:

    I created a spreadsheet to decode the serial number (below is a screenshot);

    • specifically, I have mapped the "production week number" (e.g. week 46, November) to the alphanumeric value in the 5th character in the serial number that Apple uses for its production week (e.g. "P").
    • With the spreadsheet, you can see that "P" maps to week of 11/11 to 11/17/13. PM if you would like the spreadsheet.

    Highlights:

    • When ordering a new unit or requesting a replacement unit (especially for BTO's), these should be "factory-fresh" and the latest batch.
    • Find your production week: enter your serial number here. Note: this gives you non-specific date, e.g. "week 46 (November)." Use the spreadsheet below to get the specific date range. Which is why I decided to create this spreadsheet.
    • If you're at a physical store, examine the serial number before opening and unsealing the box: look at the 5th character of the serial number (so you don't "waste" a new unit which Apple can sell to someone else).

Has it been established that getting a unit assembled more recently is better than getting a unit made earlier?

Nope...it's pure conjecture. However, some stores like Best Buy may still have first batches. I would lean towards getting a newer unit. For me, my units are BTO's, so I know they're factory fresh.

I ordered a new MacBook Pro Retina 13 inch, i7 16gb 128gb on 12th December. It was shipping on 24th December and arrived just 3 days later in Germany.

The units production week is 51 (W). So it was right for me assembled between 16th Dec and 22th Dec.

BUT actually it has an LG Panel with 'burn-in' problems. I called the customer service, they will send me a new produced unit, after TNT picked up this one in the next few days. No questions were asked after I told them I detected these strange 'burn-in' problems.

it didn't have image retention per say, but the text was a bit blurry when moving. for example, dragging a window.  another was watching moving/scrolling text such as scrolling ticker symbols.  if i stopped the scrolling the text was sharp as crystal, but not so sharp when scrolling.  it wasn't unreadable but certainly a concern when my lenovo pc laptop doesn't do that, and my 2011 MBP doesn't do that.  i don't recall my prior rMBPs having that problem but i didn't do a direct comparison so can't say.

i was just a bit worried that it would get worse by the time the 1 year warranty was up, the screen would be significantly worse - as shown here by some examples in the thread.
