Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

Not one has been seen without.  I'd wave your friend off.

Good luck getting better QC "overall" elsewhere, Samsung & similar often come close, but no cigar... Once you factor-in all of the 15/13" rMBP display deficiencies*, you may (for a window in time) have a 15/13" ultra-portable PC w/a better display, but that's about it.

Lets not digress any more here please, this thread's about 13/15" rMBP displays & assessing them, & then dispensing advice on how/where to proceed once/if there's definitely -ve prognosis. If you want to start a dedicated "Apple dudded me" thread, then by all means go crazy....

Perhaps, but it'll be cheaper.  Apple is more $$$ and so I expect higher quality screens.  They used to be known for that.  And since they are now intel, you can simply turn a PC into a Mac of sorts.  It's still dishonest what they are doing.  They have professionals happy to pay up.  Just not willing to buy defective product out if the box.

Sure the rmbp is a great machine and I don't think anyone said the contrary but since (for the 13" model) they are all plagued with IR you would be a fool to keep it as you know it will betray you somewhere along the way. It´s not Apple's fault as they don't manufacture the screen themselves but it´s their fault to keep using LG as a display maker when they know about the issue. The PC will not be as well built as the mac but in 6 months the screen will still be usuable when the mac will be good for the trash.

That's not the same experience at all, it's completely unreliable, plus, the way everything is pulled together hw/bq-wise just isn't the same.

I've done it a few times before, it gets tiresome real quick...

Are you claiming that no top-end PC laptop OEM's use LG LIPS panels? That would be a bizarro world indeed.

Anyway, can we got back on-topic now please, start a dedicated thread complaining about Apple if you want.

My only point was you can create a work around in a pinch.  Never said it was easy.

I did forget to mention that I checked out in store at Apple yesterday, 3 of the 4 machines had creaking, but all 4 units had Sammy panels on them.   No IR was evident.  But they were noticeably dimmer.

Someone mentioned earlier that they thought IGZO would be implemented in the next update, and while that doesn't gaurantee this matter gets fixed, I'd be more inclined to believe I might get a better display.  Fingers crossed.

Self censored, lets not continue the OT...

As a PSA, here's an extract from my earlier post:

After a couple of days using my rMBP with the replaced screen with no IR, all I can say is it's unevenly yellow in the bottom left. It's still a bit yellow in the bottom right. I did a test with four Finder windows opened through the screen (1 window at the bottom left, 1 at top left, 1 at top right, 1 at bottom right) and I can clearly see 3 distinctly tinted Finders. Basically, if IR only appears on dark backgrounds, yellowing is noticeable in brighter backgrounds. You think you can live with it, but it's really annoying.

Although IR is a embarrassing issue as your colleagues see your login window full of that ghosting effect, it's a issue mostly imperceptible in everyday tasks (unless you edit a lot of pictures with large regions of darkgrays). Yellowing, on the other hand, is a constant, very annoying effect. I'm almost convinced to try another screen. Now it will be harder convincing the technicians to give me another exchange, but maybe I should try.

By the way, can someone say something about the manufacturing date of my screen? I don't know how to get the production week as I read some people saying on this topic... thanks!

Best thing to do is wait for the next refresh ...

I would like also to know when my computer was made as every website I have tried is not giving me Anh result with my SN aside from a software I downloaded which gave me a date in the future lool

I just purchased a 15 inch rMBP and found that it has the LG display.  The I have had it since Friday (3 days) and I have not noticed the IR issue, but it does have the LG display.

Is this something that will happen because it is the LG display or if it doesn't have now, it won't develop it?

Also, is it not there because Apple fixed the issue or has nothing been done yet?

I called support, but I did not get any information from them on this issue.  They just wanted to know if I had the issue or not and basically invited me to return it, if I was concerned.  I amy do it, but I wanted to get your input first.

But returning it to buy another in hopes to get the Samsung display seems silly, because who knows, I could get 10 in a row with the LG, I guess it depends on the "batch" of displays being used.....

any insight would be helpful.  Thanks.

It's a characteristic of that panel tech (to varying degrees)...

Some claim that in all cases it'll get much worse by ~12mth onwards.

But they've got 0 evidence of that other than some anecdotal stuff here, hardly compelling.

Lets try this once more & hope I don't get ignored, yet again:

I've explained my IR symptoms in a earlier post, but I'm not sure they're bad enough to warrant replacing my display, let alone the entire machine.

Especially since I've had it for just over 1yr now*, what are my chances like, & how do I know if my IR's "bad enough"?

I've run the test that Apple supposedly does & it wasn't noticeable, but w/a more rigorous test it was, + I often notice it in my regular use, but it usually fades quite quickly.

And a *BUMP* for these points:

Can you point to any forums/communites focused around display optimisation hw/sw for the 13-15" rMBP's?

I've heard of xrite before too, hmm, how to decide!?!

Methinks I need to find a community that talks exclusively about this stuff, esp. for use on rMBP's!

If anyone knows of any, please advise...

    Source: https://discussions.apple.com/message/24345113#24345113

Know of any good graphics designer communities or similar that talk lots about display optimisation/calibration?

I will do, but I need to decide on the optimal make/model for me 1st, I want to get many others opinions on that.

    Source: https://discussions.apple.com/message/24345725#24345725

Finally, what's with this forum auto-logging us out constantly, is there a way to stop that? I've participated in dozens of communities/forums over the yrs & most don't do that.

    Thank-you.

*Very busy year, I do have Apple Care though, the IR's mostly been so light that It's rarely bothered me in normal use -but it "may" be getting worse

I've had 3 iPads that haven't had IR at purchase but have developed it over time.  So yes, I've seen it first hand on panels apple uses in their products be ok on day one, and then develope it over time.

Mac427, I'd recommend either use it up to the 2 weeks and see how it does and check it, if you are buying by credit card keep this one and buy another to compare against, or simply return and wait till the next product refresh.

Yes, anecdotal, thanks for reinforcing my point...

I have 2x iPads on which I haven't observed an issue.

That doesn't mean my observation is the absolute truth & nothing but the truth.

So, is it safe to say that in the late 2013 refresh. Apple did not address and has never addressed the LG IR issue?
