It would be really disappointing to own a mac with no IR for 12 months and, as the warranty ends, getting troubled with it… I really don't know what to do.

My screen was replaced with an LG, and the bill showed 510€ of work and replacement; fortunately enough, it was in warranty. I don't think anyone here is willing to pay that much for a screen that may come up with major issues within a few time.

Not condoning the rip-off practice (and if you are in Europe  the 2 year warranty  will not play out only in theory) get Apple Care if in doubt.

You still can buy Apple Care (ebay is a cheaper option than a brick and mortar store) if within the 1 year warranty period.

Apple Care will also make it easier to sell it on.  MIne is covered under a 3 year limited warranty contract between universities and Apple (some universities in the UK provide this kind of deal between Apple and higher education institutions). If I hadn't got this I would have thought of buying  Apple Care before the 1 year warranty ends.

Mine is 610 as well. Did you manage to find out if this is LG or Samsung?

I don't know if this can help anyone, but at the Apple Store where I got my screen replaced a Genius spoke about three different manufactures for them: LG, Samsung and… Toshiba.

That is interesting. No one has ever mentioned Toshiba in connection with the screen maker.

Well that settles that. I was a bout to buy another Apple product, and considering the 13" MBP, but with customers complaining about a manufacturing problem that has been going on for 6 months, I think not. Thats a very clear warning.

This is an unfortunate reflection on Apple's product quality and customer service.

I feel sorry anybody who has a bad display, and I understand your frustration.

However, I would like to take up cudgels for Apple and mention that there are also (some) customers like me, who do not have any issues. I got a rMBP'13 (late 13 model, and before late 2012 model as well) and I had no problems at all. It was my first Mac, before I was a PC user - but never wanna go back. Nevertheless, I familiar with the PC market and this device is by far the best I have ever had - of course, at a high price tag.

BTW, can anybody tell me how I can see which display type I have?

    BTO 15" 2.3 i7, 16GB, 1TB HDD, ordered 18th Jan, box says shipping on 2014/01/22

    Color LCD

    Model 0000A022

    Manufacture Date CD238700

Samsung, no image rentention for now. No yellow tint, but screen is kind of dimmed when compare to my 11" Air 2013 or Thunderbolt 27".

Should I keep this as I'm mostly in luck?

Hello, I didn't follow this thread, so I'm sorry if that has already been answered. I have a Base model Retina MacBook Pro 15" with Mavericks. How can I see if I have a samsung or a lg display ? Thanks

  • MacOSX10.6 Level 1 Level 1 (0 points)

As harsh as it may sound but you need to go back and skim through the answers. Hint: System Preferences and 'mmod' should suffice.

If you have an older model with Retina (pre late-2013) I think the command line will work as well.

Someone has mentioned Toshiba as the third player here and I am not sure if my 15" A019 correlates with LG anymore or my brother's 13" A020 for the matter.

Hello, has anyone this IR experience on the macbook retina 15" late 2013? Solved apple this problem or they didnt care a out it?

  • brdeveloper Level 1 Level 1 (0 points)

Got my 3rd display (2nd replacement). The first had IR (but evenly colored). The second (SJA2) was unevenly yellow at bottom left, going less noticeable to the right while being magenta at top. The current display (SJA2) is evenly yellow at bottom, magenta at the top. I'll try a refund with Apple. Can't believe I'll get anything better after the 2nd replacement.

I think you got all the refurbished ones. That's the sad thing even if you gonna replace your screen by Apple there is zero guarantee that one will get a brand new one.

I really wonder what are they doing with all the screens undergoing replacements. Do the seconds  then end up in the refurbished models?

  • Chuckkuda Level 1 Level 1 (0 points)

I dont understand how can this even after 1,5 years happen.. You buy a new macbook for a lot of money ( it is more expensive than other laptops) and after you get it you must bring it back to apple and you get instead your new screen a refurbished one. And even after several rounds you didnt get a good one.

(Sorry for my bad english i am from Hungary)

I think they do a "let's push this unit to the consumer and hope that he'll accept it".
