Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), Mac OS X (10.7.4)

Does anyone know if the New 2015 Macbook Pro Retina 15 inch still has the Image-Retention issue?

    Does the old terminal command: ioreg -lw0 | grep "EDID" | sed "/[^<]*</s///" | xxd -p -r | strings -6 work on the New 2015 15 inch?

This command seems to run fine on my 2012 macbook.  I just ordered a screen from china for 165 USD.  Will take care of it myself...

Can you post a link on the screen you ordered?

    Hi,

This is the one, but why don't you wait until I fix mine and see how well it works.

    Hi guys,

My screen just came in from China.  Declared value was 20$ USD so no duty/taxes.  Paid $200 CAD on ebay with free shipping.  Will be installing it in the next two to three days...

I don't know why Apple doesn't fix this.  It happened to all of my friends who have one.  I think it's the display manufacturer, because the Dell XPS 12 displays have the same problem.

    Well,

Only 2012s seem to have the issue so I am pretty sure they are aware of it and just don't want to admit it...  Anyways, if it gets recalled, they will pay me ke$h for the money and time I spent fixing the glitch.

And yes, it's a display quality issue.  If you google it, they had them with LG and Samsung screens.  Only the LG screens had the issue...

Unfortunately not only the 2012 has the IR issue, but the 2013 MBPr has it as well.  Originally I had my 2013 15" with the  Samsung display (played the lottery with 5 MBPr till I got the Samsung).  After a year my Samsung screen had a cluster of dead pixels and I went to Apple, they replaced it with no hustles, but now I have the LG screen.  When they installed it, there was no IR, but now a year later when I test with the http://www.marco.org/rmbp-irtest.html I can see a slight image retention lingering for about a minute.

I'm just wondering if the issue is still there on the newly released 2015 MBP Retina 15 inch.  No body has responded yet.  Nobody has responded about terminal command either.  I know that it works on the 2012 and 2013 15 Inch MBPr, but what about the 2015?

I think it takes some time for the ghosting to happen...

I have a 10 year old Benq IPS 20" that did not have ghosting until 5 years of use

I went to the apple store and tried the terminal command on all 2015 MBPr 15 inch display with no success.  After copying and pasting the command (ioreg -lw0 | grep "EDID" | sed "/[^<]*</s///" | xxd -p -r | strings -6) into the terminal, I received the message that I need to install some kind of X-code, but when I installed it and I restarted the computer it asked me again to install the X-code.

I think Apple is aware of the terminal command and does not want people to know what display they have "won in the Apple lottery", because some will keep on exchanging till they get an Samsung screen.

I want to think that the problem with IR if fixed, but after my screen was replaced in August of 2014 with the LP154WT1-SJA2, now I can see a very slight image retention after 10 min test.  My hunch is that they have reduced the speed with which the LG screens deteriorate into Image Retention, yet the problem still exists and the LG screens soon or later get it.

Today I went to BestBuy and asked one of the employees to log-in as administrator on one of the MBPr 15 inch 2015 to see if I can execute the terminal command (ioreg -lw0 | grep "EDID" | sed "/[^<]*</s///" | xxd -p -r | strings -6) in order to check the display manufacturer on the Mid-2015 MBPr.  I can positively tell you that Apple has removed the option of checking the display manufacturer on the 2015 MBPr 15 inch.  So, now one cannot even play the lottery to win Samsung display, since even if one were to win, he/she would not have a way to know it.

Still no one has chimed in with any customer responses on how the screen of the 2015 MBPr responds to the http://www.marco.org/rmbp-irtest.html

This thread is slowly dying off, but I'm not sure it's because Apple has solved the problem with IR ...

Like I said, it takes about 2 years of use to ghosting to appear.  So don't play the lottery and get a regular MacBook Pro that does not have the crappy screen.

BTW, I used to have a 2006 that screen had no ghosting at all after 9 years of use before it broke down.  The screen was a bit dim, but no other screen issues.
