macbook air freeze

Update: Almost a week now without using Chrome and have had no problems at all. I've been using both Safari and Firefox without issue. Also I have run apple diagnositcs on mine as well and found no issues.

I'm guessing its the graphic driver or related as well. I felt confident that it would be a software fix since I have had no issues at all without using chrome, and decided not to return/exchange for another machine. Hopefully that turns out to be the case.

If I were you I would run the apple Diagnostics ( hold down "D" key when powering on before grey screen) and make sure those come out clean. If you are experiencing freezes in random places and uses that cannot be targeted I would consider taking your computer back to apple and exchanging it for another. Also yes, you could reinstall lion and try that as well, but do you want the hassle on a brand new machine? If it were me and my issue with Chrome was not issolated, I think I would go back for an exchange.

Also: When you manually reboot the system do you get the apple error reporting dialog box? If so look for the details and scan through there to see if you find anything specific. For example for me personally ALL the reports when mine has frozen are kernal panic's and show google chrome as the responsible/related process.

Another thing that you have know or not from the previous macbook air, there was a resume from sleep display/sleep issue that seemed to get better or resolve by doing a very odd and simple thing.

3. Click on your Start Up Disk / HDD SSHD and it will show the the text in blue and show you a message bellow "You have selected Mac OS X ..."

4. I also "click the lock to prevent further changes" just for good measure.

I don't know why but this was something I found in a tread last year for my dads 2011 MacBook Air and it seemed to resolve the issue of the computer not returning form sleep or just a black screen / or beach ball when trying to wake the computer or display. Weird, but an easy try.

Same here. MacBook Air 13" (mid 2012) i5 128gb SSD. Freeze with Chrome, I use Chrome with all my computer and is all sync, so I want this problem fixed as soon as possible. I've already changed one with DOA because the first Air was with case damaged on the edge and freezes continuely. I hoped was a problem related to that machine, but today 1 hour of life with my new mac air and already freezed one time. No way.

I've noticed stability issues with the 2012 Air as well. Some crashes with chrome and flash running - although clearly not related to sleep as I've been using the machine at the time. The main correllation that I've noticed, is that it seems prone to lock up (with the grey pop up of death) when I'm transferring large amounts of data (e.g. iPhoto library) between 2 usb drives - one on each port.

I am using the default Energy Saver settings. I do not have Chrome installed. It will just freeze up while doing jsut about anything. So i went ahead and reloaded Lion from scratch. And it was good for a little over 24 hours and then is just locked up again. I have Parallels 7, Firefox and Safari open and was watching the Mountain Lion video on apple's website in safari when it locked up hard. When I powered off and back on the error report below appeared. Not sure what the problem is now.

Same problem here. 2012 MBA freezes randomly. Very frustrating.

From your crash log it looks like the HD4000 driver. Same thing is happening to me, and I'd wager the rest of us. You can see it with this line:

com.apple.driver.AppleIntelHD4000Graphics(7.2.8)

It's the first line in the backtrace.

Makes me think its the graphics driver and not Chrome, or any specific app for that matter.

Do you have the 8 gig ram upgrade in your MBA? I have the upgrade.

Yes I would agree that it is graphics, that doesn't mean that chrome isn't contributing. There may be something is the coding for chrome that the graphics driver (again yes this is probably the culprut) doesn't know how to handle or throws it out of whack. Either way, they just need to fix the bugs with the graphics. Full system freeze where the cursor doesn't move at all is almost always related to a graphics issue, so I've been suspecting a communication bug related to that all along. Thanks for noticing that in the crash report ofgstaver45331. 🙂

@ianneub, i have the 8 gig of RAM. Looks like I have the exact same model as you.

I used disk utility to clean up the minor damage probably caused by kernel panics and stopped using chrome. No more kernel panics since then. Must be a bug in the new chipset that chrome triggers.

Update:

I went for a few days with no crashes until yesterday. Before I went to bed last night I quit all open applications including Activity Monitor, set the Energy Saver to never sleep either the CPU or the display and manually put the display to sleep with a hot corner. When I got up this morning it was locked up: I hit space bar to wake the display (shows PW box and the clock in the control bar, however the clock shows a time not associated with a crash, approximately 3 hrs prior to when the display was last put to sleep), entered password and got the beachball. Had to do a hard reset.

Here are the last four lines from the log and the start of the reboot copied from Console:

I am experiencing same freezing issue on my new MacBook Air 2012... Both freezes happened when closing tabs in Google Chrome but I am investigating other possibilities. Probably a graphic driver failure...

I got a test for 4 days since i got new MBA 13" 2012. I'm also experiencing freezing and crashing.

The problems are always happening when I'm running Mac OS X in 32 bit kernel mode.

64-bit kernel is still okay for last 6 hours.

My company VPN is only running on 32 bit mode(checkpoint secureclient R56 HFA3 for lion).

Is anyone running MBA 13" i7 / 8GB on 32bit kernel mode?
