    This can be an indication of a hardware fault either with the iPod's dock connector, the PC's USB port, or even the sync cable you are using to connect the iPod to the PC.


    So first and foremost, try plugging the iPod in with a different USB cable to verify the cable you are using is not faulty or damaged. 


    Next, try a different USB port, preferably a high powered USB 2.0 port on the back of the PC, and see if that helps.
