we have 6 devises sharing the same apple id and password. when we download a game app it will backup on all devices. therefore we can not run individual unconnected versions of the game. suggestions. thanks.

If you want them separate then each device needs to use its own separate Apple ID and purchase its own copy of an app. Each user needs to have a separate user account on the computer or have their own separate computer.
What do yo mean by: " it will backup on all devices"?
If you mean that is one persone purchases an app it appears on all device then on each device go to Settings>Store and turn off automatic downloads.
for example a game is started on one device, and the status of the game is backed up on all devices. therefore you can not run the game independently on separate devices. thanks.
thanks. i had a suspicion that separate apple id's would be necessary. do you know if i can have separate id's with the same password. reason i ask is that i can set up an id for each of the kids, but maintain one password for monitering the purchases of apps. thanks.
one more item: this primarily concerns apps. we want music selections shared with all of the devices. if i had multiple apple id's - we would not be able to share the same itunes downloaded music? thanks again.
I think Apple is keeping track of both email addresses for Apple IDs and passwords. You can try but you may get a "Password is already in use" error. The need to maintain a secure account is now outweighing all considerations for simplicity. 🙂
