IPhone 4s keep discconecting from wifi to 3G whenever screen is locked

Hi,

My iPhone 4s keeps disconnecting from my wifi and goes to 3G everytine the screen is locked.

I noticed this problem yesterday.

I searched and googled but no luck. Someone mentioned that he/she had the same problem but managed to find the solution.

I tried that one but it only applies to 3rd party routers, i have airport extreme 4th generation as my base station, and airport express 1st generation as wired extender.

All my other devices are fine, wife's iPhone 3G, both iPad 23G and wifi.

Only my iPhone 4s

All firmwares are up to date on all appale devices that i have.

Any help!!!!!

iPhone 4S, iOS 5.1, 16GB

I'm not sure why it's doing that. If you go to settings>general>network. you can toggle off the cellular data if you are worried about going over your data limit. It would also help someone more experienced to know if your iphone stayed connected to your wifi when the cellular data was turned off, or if it only happens when the cellular data is toggled on. good luck.

I noticed this problem yesterday.

That's normal. By default, whenever your iPhone goes in to sleep mode, Wifi is turned off to conserve battery. The phone will continue using the cellular data (provided that it was turned ON). Once, the phone is up; it will re-connect to Wifi network.

All my other devices are fine, wife's iPhone 3G, both iPad 23G and wifi.

Wifi on iPad works in a different way.

** I would only consider it a problem, if your phone while using Wifi had automatically turned cellular data ON after going in to sleep mode where your initial selection for cellular data was "OFF".

Hi impious-rocker,

I am not sure if i can agree with what you say!!!

First of all because i haven’t had this problem before, and I always monitor my devices activities and connection.

This started a day or 2 ago.

Second of all, if what you say is correct then it would not be possible to stay logged-in in some apps that requires continues logging to the net, such as skype, etc..

this means they will always disconnect and thus will not be of a use to what they are meant to be for!

Again, i can assure you that this has never happened before, and i did not find any official information release from apple stating that.

i would really appreciate it if you could give me the link to such information if available so i can contact apple and have them clarify and possibly amend this issue.

iPhone 3Gs and my iPad 2 (3Gs) are working perfectly without any disconnection from WiFi and running the latest update.

Many thanks

You certainly have the right to disagree.

Search Apple forum and you will find the answer. Here is something to begin with.

Search Google and there are countless links answering all of your questions.

On WIFI, it is not possible to stay logged in to Skype (or any application which runs in the background requiring Internet connection) after your phone goes in to sleep mode, unless your cellular data is also ON (the connection will shift to 3G once in sleep mode).

** My personal experience: I have noticed and experienced the same behaviour ever since I started using iPhone (iPhone 3GS). May be some users experienced different/erratic WIFI behaviour on different iOS versions, but my experience with WIFI has always been consistent which I already stated in my previous post.

thanks for the info,

though i am aware that many users including me are not happy with the battery life on the device while everything is running, but i always imagined that Apple would give the choice to the user to decide how their device operates!!!

i would like to know if there is any option that i can have both my 3G and Wifi on without having to turn off the wifi while device is in sleep mode.

But thanks anyway.

i came to know that discconecting from WiFi to 3G is a built-in feature in IOS 5 that enable battery save! your phone will keep listings to incoming connections from 3G (if it is enabled) and will turn to WiFi once needed, or when you unlock the screen manually to use your phone!

However, i did find a fix (at least works for me at the moment)

Connect your iPhone to your Mac/PC and launch iTunes (if it is not already launched, make sure you run latest iTunes version), once your phone is visible in the left hand side column, click on it, then in the right window you will see tabs on top (summary, info, apps, tones, etc....), click on summary and scroll to the bottom of the page until you reach options box, tick the box that says (Sync with this iPhone over wifi) and then hit apply in the bottom right corner (check any warranging message if they show up).

now you can disconnect your iPhone and close/quit iTunes.

Now your phone will have WiFi on all the time, and will be automatically discovered in iTunes once you launch it (if you want)

This is working for me.

I have tried many of the benign suggestions like renaming my SSID, etc.

Apple Support (Advanced Support) worked with me to finally turn off my 5G (iPhone 4S and below do not support) SSIDs on my router.

Once I did that, the 2.4 GHz networks connected and stayed connected. On four separate devices.

His suggestion was that there may be interference between channels on the Home and Guest Networks I had running (4 of them: two on 5G and 2 on 2.4GHz). He suspected the 5G's (which will not connect to iPhones, Touches, etc.) were the source of the disruption.

I will see if this stays as a solution. For now, the advice is working.

If you call Apple Support, patiently do all the things the Tier One supports asks, then you will be sent up to a higher tier. Make sure you have plenty of time and access to everything you need (syncing PC or MAC, Cloud, another phone, power cords, etc.)🙂

Hey, there is an easy fix! I ran into the same problem. On IPhone go to Settings>Wi-Fi Click on Other... then type in the name (SSID) of the network and the other info it requires to connect, that being a password if needed. Personally I use WPA2 encrption so i would chose that then enter the passcode for the wi-fi! Once done it will connect, assuming you have all the info correct, then no matter if you shut the phone off or just turnwi-fi off then back on it will always instantly attempt connection to the network through wifi first!
