Having problems with 1080p?

I own a macbook pro 15.4in 2008, 2.4ghz/4ram, and I was wondering if 1080p is supposed to work on it? I'm having lots of skipping in my videos. It can't be internet because my PC plays them just fine. Just wondering if my Mac should be able to or not...
