Can someone explain "Turbo Boost: to me?

OK - so the new MacBook Pro non-Retina offers:

  • 2.6GHz quad-core Intel Core i7
  • Turbo Boost up to 3.6GHz

How do you activate 'turbo boost'? Is it simply a function within the processor?

Just curious - I'm staying with what I have just now.

Turbo Boost is achieved when all cores (i5 and i7) are all running at the same time. It will activate to run the application efficiently and faster to avoid strain on the processor.

You will not however, benefit on intel's turbo boost technology when you're just browsing the web or using MS Office.

To notice how turbo boost works, open a large file in Photoshop and start working on it, you might feel a slight lag and all of the sudden, you're on full speed.

Bear in mind though, that when running on batteries, turbo mode will not activate since the processor is running on power save mode.
