Does the iPod appear on your desktop as an external hard drive? Has the iPod ever successfully connected before? Disconnect your iPod and reset it using the Select (Center) and Menu button combo. Then reboot your Mac, open iTunes, and reconnect your iPod to a high powered USB 2.0 port and see if it's recognized.

Have you worked through all the troubleshooting here?

I have done all of the above and no, the iPod is not showing in iTunes or on the desktop even in disk mode. I went into diagnostics as per instructions on this message https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3577201?answerId=17028567022#17028567022and when information on the HDsmart data was suppose to show up all it gave me was the word 'error'.

Is there anything else I can do or is it time to get a new one?
