On June 15, 2017, Apple forced two-factor authentication on all third-party apps. You have to enable it on your computer, and then generate an app-specific password. It is definitely more secure because if someone breaks into a poorly writter third-party app, they won't get your Apple ID and password. The caveat is that on OS X 10.9 or earlier, there is no way to enable it. Your only option is to upgrade OS X to 10.10 or newer.

The OS X upgrade, of course, breaks some old programs that I paid a lot of money to purchase and use on a regular basis because of some other forced code deprication (by both Apple and the giant photo manipulation program with exorbitant costs that I will not mention) in the name progress . . . .

Something is very wrong with BusyCal. It won't sync to my phone anymore. I prefer to not use iCloud because it truncates all my event notes. I've depended on BusyCal for years to run my business and have ALL of my details with me all the time. I've turned iCloud on and off to see if I could get any information onto my phone that is newer than 3 weeks old. No luck. This issue is a little bit older than Mountian Lion. I believe there was a BusyCal update around the time this started. In the Mac App Store there is only one review of the current version. He says it won't sync with iCal. Anything I've tried to use iCloud with has been a disaster. If there was a better calendar somewhere, I would buy it. I don't want to go back to Outlook. Please don't make me go back to Outlook!

BusyCal 2 does not support SyncServices. It's designed to sync using iCloud. They say:

Sync Services is an underlying framework of OS X that BusyCal has relied on for years for syncing local calendars with other apps running on your Mac and devices connected physically to your Mac. Alas, Apple has deprecated Sync Services in Mountain Lion and it no longer works reliably. Therefore, we have removed support for Sync Services. That means:

  • You can no longer sync with an iPhone or iPad via iTunes. You can only sync with an iPhone or iPad via a cloud-based service like iCloud or Google.
  • You can no longer sync local calendars with OS X Calendar (formerly iCal). You can, however, continue to sync calendars hosted on a cloud-based service like iCloud or Google with OS X Calendar.
  • You can no longer sync with any third-party apps running on your Mac that use Sync Services, like Entourage or Outlook.
  • If you are syncing OS X Calendar or Outlook with Exchange, the Exchange calendars will no longer sync with BusyCal.

When you upgrade to BusyCal 2, a copy of your local calendars will be imported into BusyCal 2. This is a one-time operation. After the import, the local calendars in BusyCal will not remain in sync with OS X Calendar or any other apps that sync with Sync Services.
