Update your system to at least 10.6.6, and then get Lion from the Mac App Store.

I got 10.6.8.
What does this do then? What would happen if I didn't have that?
A version of Mac OS X 10.6 prior to 10.6.6 will not have the Mac App Store.

Lion can only be downloaded from the App Store, thus you need 10.6.6 or higher to actually have the App Store program on your Mac.
Good luck

Hi ..
When you upgarde to Snow Leopard, that will install the App Store for you. Minimum requirements for the App Store is Mac OS X v10.6.6 as noted here > About the Mac App Store
Before purchasing Lion, make sure your Mac meets Lion's requriements.

Also, is it possible to jump from Snow Leopard to the new Mountain Lion that is out soon, or do I have to get Lion?
Apple announced that you can get Mountain Lion from either Snow Leopard or Lion.
