I can't send SMS with my Verizon iPhone 4s. I'm in Amsterdam, using a Vodafone NL SIM card. Can send/receive phone calls, receive texts, and use data; just can't send texts!
I've checked and reset the message center number by "calling": **5005*7672*+316540881000# on my phone.
When I type in *#5005*7672# it gives me the +316540881000 phone number. But, I still can't send texts.

verizon is cdma phone. how could you acitivate it on gsm sim card?

The iPhone 4s has a SIM card actually, in addition to CDMA. I bought it specifically so that I could bring it to Europe and use with a SIM card here.
Have you contacted Vodafone to make sure that the account is properly provisioned?
Yeah, been to their stores twice, emailed, and having a twitter conversation with them @vodafoneNL. They don't seem to know what's up aside from changing the messaging center number, which hasn't helped.
Wondering if Verizon just hasn't properly unlocked my phone or something... will follow up with them as well.
That would be a Vodafone issue. If you're able to connect to their network and make/receive calls, then they don't have it provisioned properly.
If you're able to make and receive calls, that seems as if it's a pretty good indicator that the phone is unlocked. Verizon is also pretty clear about the fact that they will not provide technical support if you are using another carrier's SIM. Maybe the SIM is defective? I'm reaching, here...

I'm facing the same problem. Being able to call, get called, receive sms but not able to send sms.
My iPhone 4S doesn't want to get activated on VodafoneNL, it keeps showing "No service".

Not sure exactly what did the trick, but I believe Verizon had unlocked my phone from their end, but I needed to plug my phone into my computer so iTunes could do something to update it, maybe update the carrier settings?
It's strange because I updated the carrier settings a few times before that, but it wasn't until I spent a few hours at the Apple Store and calling Verizon about unlocking my phone and THEN plugging in my phone to my computer that it worked.
Sorry I don't have a better answer, but on the up side I hope it's reassuring that I was able to get it working eventually!
