So ios 6 will not be on ipad 1.

On the basis the ios 6 will not be on the first generation ipad, does this mean that apple will not issue any updates or support for the product again. Just want to know if ipad 1 is now obselete or what?

iPad, iOS 5.1.1

I bought this product when it first came out. How does your comment help me? I am running into websites I can't use because my Safari is out of date.

So, my purchase is obsolete now. Forcing me to purchase a newer model? Planned obsolescence.

Four years after the post you responded to? Yes, an original iPad is indeed, and officially vintage/obsolete.

Vintage and obsolete products - Apple Support

Consumer technology evolves at an ever increasing pace and obsolescence of most products occurs in under 5 years (often under 2). If you find that a problem, then I'd suggest you not invest any further monies into any consumer electronics. Samsung, Apple, and other manufacturers average at least one new model of smart phone and tablet every single year (Samsung typically releases their new models every May).

I own the iPad 1 and am happy with it. I don't need the camera or Siri with it. But to not let it upgrade to iOS 6 is not right. If it is said that iOS 6 runs slow on it, maybe the developers should optimize the OS. This is similar to Microsoft not supporting Windows Phone 7. But at least they are upgrading the phones to 7.8. Maybe iOS has become bloteware as well.

So I've read through this thread and here goes.

Apple is a "for profit" company. They like money, and lately people have been willing to give apple lots of money for their products. Apple is attempting to maximize their profits. They want to keep people buying their stuff. If they support their prior products with the same software functions as new products would the masses have reasons to upgrade? Probably not.

So yes, apple is essentially cutting software updates for the iPad 1. It has happened to people with other devices, one day they learned their device was no longer supported. I am sure you may be aware about the outrage over Mac OS 10.7 not supporting rosetta, this was "outlandish", but also simply a biproduct of change.

Change happens, and companies like money, "user uprisings" will not force apple to support "legacy" products. The iphone 3GS, technicaly inferior or not, is still up for sale. Apple makes money from subsized sales of it, so of course they want to keep it up to date.

I have two iPad 1s and an iPod touch 3rd gen that will no longer be getting updates for iOS. I am moving on. I know everybody may not be able to purchase every new shiney apple gadget. I also understand that "spitting in the wind" so to speak wont help either.

Best of luck to you all.

When I purchased my iPad 1 I was expecting to get updates for 3 years and then I would have to buy the new version. I only got 2 years out of the iPad 1. I think that this is a very short life span for a product I paid $700. Apple is artificially shortening the life of that product and I am not impressed. I can't afford this pace.

Simply not releasing the next major version of an OS for a given device does not mean that support from Apple will cease.

Although I have expressed the opinion that it is unfair for Apple to not release iOS 6 for the iPad 1, I do however understand and believe that Apple will continue to support the iPad 1, but just not with iOS 6. So there will continute to be bug fixes and security patches, repairs, that sort of thing.

However, the app developer's community will be less likely to continue to support iOS5 once iOS6 takes off, so the usability and resale value will start to decline pretty significantly after iOS 6 is out, and I believe unfairly so, since the iPad 1 still has more than enough power to run iOS6.

I'm certain that Apple never actually promised to keep the iPad 1 (or any iDevice) supported on all new iOS releases for any amount of time. But I do beieve that Apple will continue to support the iPad 1 within the constrains of iOS5. It's too bad and it is really unfair, but at least the iPad 1 will continue to work as it has for a while, at least.

So ios 6 will not be on ipad 1.
