When I make a security backup on to icloud, is it safe? - are all of my pictures and other data all open or is it encrypted?

If it is encrypted is all the bit stream from my device encrypted fra my device or ?

All your information held on the Apple servers is encrypted. The only security you can add yourself is via your password.
