Time machine will not open

Hi Guys

Has anyone ever had an issue with time machine not opening? I am trying to open the app to run a backup and it is not doing anything I can see, even in activity monitor? It did seem to be working fine, pop in a new external hard drive and it would ask if I wanted to use this drive? Ran it once saw how long it was going to take and cancelled. Now when it comes to wanting to use it the app will not open, has anyone has this issue, I am stuck?

Is there any alternative from running it from the terminal?

Many Thanks

Do a Spotlight search for 'Time Machine', the third option down select System Preferences for Time Machine. This is different from launching the app. The app is there to show your recent backups. From your post it doesn't sounds like you have any and so the app wont launch. If the Time Machine icon is in the menu bar you can click the icon and the same option 'Time Machine Preferences' is on the bottom of the drop menu.
