Q: iTunes will not update!

I haven't updated my iTunes in some time but went to download and install the 10.6.3 update a few days ago and am unable to do so. I receive no error message; when opening iTunes, the usual dialog box appears saying that there is a new version of iTunes available. I click "Download iTunes", the box disappears, but nothing happens. Sometimes, I can see a progress bar that reads "Accessing iTunes Store" very briefly but it disappears as well and does not appear every time I try to download the update.

I have seen many others with the same problem but no solutions and I am hesitant to uninstall and reinstall iTunes as I have seen many others with the same problem completely unable to use iTunes after doing so.

Please help!

Was having the same problem trying to update from 10.7 to 11.3. I installed service pack 3 for Windows XP (minimum requirement for itunes 11.3) then the itunes installer started working. I realise this is probably not any help for you seeing as you are using Vista but may be useful for someone...

I know I'm late to the party but I just wanted to show that this problem can be HUGELY problematic. The same thing is happening to me! Unfortunately, I didn't know that until I reset (deleted everything from) my phone. GUESS WHAT YOU NEED TO RESTORE YOUR IPHONE TO A BACKUP? THE LATEST VERSION OF ITUNES! SO HERE I AM WITH NO WORKING PHONE... yay.

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.

The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down page in case one of them applies.

Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there is backup and recovery advice elsewhere in the user tip.
