Q: iTunes will not update!

I haven't updated my iTunes in some time but went to download and install the 10.6.3 update a few days ago and am unable to do so. I receive no error message; when opening iTunes, the usual dialog box appears saying that there is a new version of iTunes available. I click "Download iTunes", the box disappears, but nothing happens. Sometimes, I can see a progress bar that reads "Accessing iTunes Store" very briefly but it disappears as well and does not appear every time I try to download the update.

I have seen many others with the same problem but no solutions and I am hesitant to uninstall and reinstall iTunes as I have seen many others with the same problem completely unable to use iTunes after doing so.

Please help!

    Ah. Sorry.

I thought that was all attributable to a catastrophic crash/system corruption thing going on with your system.

So, to clarify - not all of us, but most of us are sitting on functional versions of iTunes in the meantime and checking for updates doesn't cause our systems to freeze up or crash.

For those that are dealing with crashing/freezing issues with the current build of iTunes and can't update through the traditional means, I can absolutely understand how this is more frustrating.

@ Frankie: no worries. In my case, I'm dealing with two support issues:

    1) the aforementioned Win7 Home 64-bit machine where the iTunes client is unstable and the update issue is occurring and

    2) a second workstation (my own) that suffered a recent catastrophic failure. I'm in the middle of building it back up from scratch (AND want to buy a new iPhone 4S), but I don't want to install iTunes only to find out that it is foobar'd.

With the complete re-build, I will probably grab an image of the fresh Windows install and then try installing iTunes to see how things play out. Fingers crossed, the issue is sorted and I can move on with the project.

    @Ivantek

Just tried to run Apple Software Update and it did not find an update today 6/25/2012 on a Windows 7 64 bit system.

iTunes found the update but as before, would not download it.

Still the same results here as well. Checked for updates, iTunes found an available update 10.6.3, but as before when I cliked on 'download' nothing happens.

Apple Support Communities is having "scheduled maintenance" done at 10PM tonight. Who knows, maybe they will use this maintenance down time to set a few things straight and the ASU will be magically working tomorrow. I know it's a long shot, but one can always hope.

    Hello,

I have kind of the same problem. I'm using OS X Server Software Update Service and was thinking this is a problem with this update service. I re-initialized the whole update server just to recognized that it does not offer the iTunes update to me. All other updates are working perfectly over it. Just good to read here that also the download fails from official Apple update servers so I don't have to spend the night wondering what's wrong with my server.

    Cheers

    Robert

    Hey all.

I decided to try the Apple Software Update again today and I was surprised that I got the slow green status bar crawl and pleased when it completed and showed updates for iTunes and some other Apple software.

It hadn't been doing that recently, I wasn't even getting the green status bar crawl, so I decided to try the update.

The first attempt downloaded an iTunes update with a bad signature. I was discouraged but tried again.

The second time got one with a good signature (I guess) and fully installed iTunes 10.6.3.25!

So, Windows 7 64 bit users give it a go (and try again if you get one with a bad signature message), it looks like Apple have sorted out their issues and are allowing the Apple updater to hit their servers and get the files.

Worked for me too. Apple software updater seems to be working fine again and I'm back up and running with iTunes 10.6.3.25

    Thanks all for the thread!!!

Good news,  the ASU seems to be working again(starting today for me and for the past few days I've seen positive reports from other places on planet earth). I've only been able to see this on my computer at work(running Win 7 32) but it definitely IS working as it should. It loads, starts the appropriate green bar search progress, and then finds anything on my computer that needs to be either updated or installed - I know this because I do not have Safari installed on my work computer and it is now 10 for 10 in loading and finding and telling me that I should download and install Safari 5.1.7(everything else on my work computer from Apple is already installed and fully updated). Hopefully, when I get home, I will find that my desktop and laptop are also working as they should.  It appears it was a problem from Apple's end this entire time. As others have speculated in other similar threads; Apple most likely "fixed" this on their end about 3 days ago, but has been slowly dispersing the "fix" throughout their worldwide update servers. Some people were lucky enough to have the servers in their neck of the woods fixed earlier then others. Hopefully, as Apple finally matriculates the fix to ALL their update servers, everyone will be back up and running smoothly with their Apple Software Updater. If the ASU on your machine is still wonky, just hold out for a bit longer; It should be up and working any day now.

When I went home on Saturday 6/30/12, I found that both my Desktop(Windows 7 64bit) and my laptop(Windows Vista 32bit) were back up with the Apple Software Updater and running perfectly. So in my neck of the woods(Eastern Pennsylvania in the USA), everything seems to have been "fixed" by Apple. I know how frustrating it is waiting but it should, hopefully, be up and running for everyone quite soon.

I hate to beat a dead horse  (this update thing) but as of today July 3rd, mine still won't update.  I still get the little message to "update" when I pull up Itunes but it does nothing.  I checked the Apple Software Updater (as has been previously suggested), & it tells me there are updates available & it does the "search" but then when the screen comes up it lists NOTHING.  I get nothing listed under the updates available.  So what does this mean?  Obviously, this is why I can't update from Itunes either.  Is this what the basic problem is, the Apple Software Updater"  Do I just wait now, & check that every once in a while to see if it shows the new update?  My current ITunes is working fine, so I guess I just wait???  Thanks!

I still cannot get anything either.  It is making things really hard for someone who just got their replacement phone in the mail and needs the new version of itunes to get all of their contact info!  I am hot right now.
