Macbook Pro now not reading disc from DVD recorder.

I have a Panasonic DMR-EZ47V recorder and I've converted some of my VHS to DVD+R. They were finalized and are able to play back on the Panasonic machine, but when I put them in my laptop it tells me I have inserted a blank disc. About a year ago the same discs played on my computer just fine, so I don't know what has happened since then. They also play on my Sony Blu-ray player, so I know it's not just the disc or the player. What has happened that now my Macbook is showing the DVDs as blank and what can I do??

try this ( I opened the dvd player and clicked on help and wrote "disk not" (recognized) but the menu dropped down with "if dvd's don't play automatically" and I clicked on that and found this:If DVDs don’t play automatically

Choose Apple menu > System Preferences and click CDs & DVDs.
Open CDs & DVDs preferences
From the pop-up menu labeled “When you insert a video DVD,” choose Open DVD Player.
In DVD Player, choose DVD Player > Preferences and click Player.
Next to “When a disc is inserted,” select “Start playing disc.”

Either the preferences for the file system reading got corrupted somehow, or your optical drive is damaged.

One way to test it is boot off an erase and installed external hard drive and see if you have trouble reading the disc. If you do, you know you have a hardware problem.

Clean a DVD disc or optical drive

You can help prolong the life of your DVD discs by handling them carefully and by keeping the discs and your optical drive free of dust and residue.

Do any of the following:

To clean a disc, wipe it gently from the center of the disc outward using a soft, lint-free cloth. To remove residue, use isopropyl alcohol or a commercial cleaner made especially for cleaning discs. Allow the disc to air-dry before using it.
To clean an optical drive, use a commercially available kit, which may include a special DVD disc and special cleanser. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the kit.
To clean a drive tray (if your DVD drive has one), use a cotton swab and some isopropyl alcohol. Allow the tray to air-dry for a few moments before closing it.

only guess then that I have, based on reading some comments here years ago (under powerbook, not macbook) was that maybe if the vhs had copyright markers the apple shuts off recognition....

Hopefully a person far more masterful than I will come to your aid.

what exactly is the message? "what to do with this blank disc, open finder?" or what?

I find this in help:If a “Supported disc not available” message appears

DVD Player doesn’t recognize video content burned onto certain types of DVD-RW discs.

If DVD Player doesn’t recognize a disc, you may see a “Supported disc not available” message in the Viewer window when you try to play the disc. If you burned the disc, try burning the content onto a DVD-R disc instead.

It will play the same DVD+R that was burned from another computer using an editing software, so it can't be the disc type. I just don't know if there was a software change or something that won't recognize the recorded ones anymore, because the same discs used to play.

I don't suppose the pop up menu offers "play it anyway"...

This is a quandary. Did you see the one I posted about cleaning the disk? Give a visual inspection of the disk...is it clean? If not, clean and try again....

I am getting really seriously hungry here (I get hooked on reading the discussions! )...

After i eat I will return to see if I can learn something for you...
