Q: OS upgrade

I have three Mac Minis running OS 10.4.11 and want to upgrade to OS 10.5.8. What is the best way to go about this, purchase a copy of Lion and then back install 10.5.8?

thanks,

First make sure that they can run Leopard:

    Leopard system requirements:

    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3759

Then you will have find a retail copy of Leopard on eBay or Amazon as Apple no longer supply or support older versions of OS X.

Lion requires an Intel-based Mac with a Core 2 Duo, i3, i5, i7 or Xeon processor and 2GB of RAM, running the latest version of Snow Leopard.

Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard installation system requirements

Leopard is no longer available at the Apple Store but may be available by calling Apple Phone Sales @ 1-800-MY-APPLE (1-800-692-7753).

If you can't obtain a retail install DVD from Apple, look on eBay or Google the installer part numbers to possibly find at an on-line store. Here's what to look for:

    MB427Z/A  Leopard 10.5.1 install DVD

    MB576Z/A  Leopard 10.5.4 install DVD

MB021Z/A  Leopard 10.5.6 install DVD (single user)

MB022Z/A  Leopard 10.5.6 install DVD (5-user family pack)

Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard Installation and Setup Guide

After you install the base 10.5, download & install the 10.5.8 combo update at http://support.apple.com/downloads/Mac_OS_X_10_5_8_Combo_Update

The DVD should look like this

    leopard.jpg

Caution - Leopard does not support classic mode. So, if you currently open OS 9 apps in classic mode, you won't be able to do this if you upgrade to Leopard.

    Thank you for your responses.

    I apologize....Let me clarify....

The computers I am wanting to install Leopard on are MacMinis 1.66 GHz Intel Core Duo with 2 GB RAM and 120GB of storage space. So I know it can run Leopard. I have one copy of a Leopard install DVD already. What I really want to know is if I purchase a copy of the Newest OS (10.7) for each Mini, can I legally take this Leopard install DVD and install it on these Minis?

I know it would probably be less expensive to buy Leopard install DVDs, but I would be able to use these Lion Install DVDs down the road as I retire these particular minis in a year or so and purchase new ones. Then I could use these Lion installs on the computers I purchased last year that are running 10.6.

Does this make sense or is my thinking warped?

    Thanks!

Hello, it's not exactly clear to me what you're trying to do, but...

Gray Install Discs are pretty much Machine specific.

Lion does not come on DVDs, but is available on Flash drives for $69, if you can erase your disks...

    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MD256

Maybe intead of Leopard you want Snow Leopard...

    Snow Leopard/10.6.x Requirements...

    General requirements

       * Mac computer with an Intel processor

        * 1GB of memory (I say 4GB at least)

        * 5GB of available disk space (I say 30GB at least)

        * DVD drive for installation

        * Some features require a compatible Internet service provider; fees may apply.

        * Some features require Apple’s MobileMe service; fees and terms apply.

Which apps work with Mac OS X 10.6?...

    http://snowleopard.wikidot.com/

It looks like they do still have it:

    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A?fnode=MTY1NDAzOA

And it's been reported that if you have a MobileMe account Apple will send one free.

    If it's a core Duo & not a Core2Duo, then it'll only run in 32 bit mode.

    Snow Leopard/10.6.x Requirements...

    Lion/10.7 System requirements

        •    x86-64 processor (Macs with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Intel Core i3, Intel Core i5, Intel Core i7, or Xeon processor.)

        •    At least 2GB of memory, (I say 4GB)

        •    Latest version of Mac OS X Snow Leopard (10.6.8), with the Mac App Store installed

        •    At least 4GB of disk space for downloading, (I say 40GB at least)

Like Snow Leopard, Lion does not support PowerPC-based Macs (e.g., Power Macs, PowerBooks, iBooks, iMacs (G3-G5), eMacs).

Lion also does not support 32-bit Intel Core Duo or Core Solo based Macs. Rosetta is no longer available in Lion, which means Lion no longer supports PowerPC applications.

Thank you for the wonderful response!

It looks like Snow Leopard is the way to go on these computers.

Thank you all for the advice!!
