Some HD clips Transfer grainy

I have a video transfer situation and can use help. When I view HD recorded clips in my external drive via Quicktime files, HD quality is 100% in all clips. After importing some clips (not all) into an Imovie project, some are grainy especially in the dark tones. I tried the obviouse setting import changes, but still grainy. Any help would be appreciated.
