Can't find attachments Lion Mail

The new Mail with Lion doesn't display received attachments any more. I just got an important attachment and can't find it. The paperclip icon is visible in the list. In Mail Prefs the Desktop is selected for attachments, but it's not there. It doesn't show up in the body of the email message as it used to in 10.6. Why is that? Is there a folder where Mail attachments go? Thanx.

I, too, am having the issue of "no paperclip icon" in sent mail. Yes I have all the columns set up for it. Since June 26, 2012 only 4 emails show the paperclip. One is a PDF that I forwarded from someone else. The other three end with .docx.pdf This makes it difficult to search for any particular email that I am trying to find that I know I attached something to.

Every jpg, tif, bmp etc file is embedded in the outgoing email.

I just called Applecare and the genius there said she had never heard of this problem.

Any fixes yet or are a lot of people having this issue?

I originally thought I wasn't sending attachments because of that. However a while back I found a rule, to be included in the 'Rules' for Mail that was supposed to solve the outgoing paperclip icon problem.(Preferences>Rules) I think for a while it did, but I too have not seen any paperclip since June and I know that I have been able to send and recieve attachments. It may be that the 'rule' which I made just doesn't work or needs to be updated. I can't remember where I found that 'rule' but it must have been another thread or a link to a site. I am not smart enough to devise such a rule by myself but I'd like to know if you find one.

Another problem is that Mail no longer shows outgoing photos, and it's nice to know what photos you send to whom. Somehow Lion dumbed down Mail and it's going to take some fixing to straighten it out.

Hello Ken...I hope the last 60 days have been good to you.

I just had two little epiphanies.

Go to Mail>view>columns, and click on ATTACHMENTS.

Also before I found that, I went to my Sent mail and clicked on an email I knew I had dragged a pic into for sending. In the top right corner (not the double click on to open a new page, just click once so the thing shows in main mail window) and top right is either, in blue, hide details, or details. details shows Save and Quick look which if you click on, it opens the attachment in its own window.

When I clicked on Attachments in the columns, the paperclips appear in right column.

I hope this helps.

Are you looking for the paperclip in INCOMING mail, or Sent mail? If you want it in sent, open sent folder then adjust the Mail>pref's>View> Attachments. If you want it in the incoming mail, open inbox, then mail pref's>view>columns>attachments

(ditto for sort by, though you can change sort by, by clicking on the caption in the mail pane...to, from, date...etc)

Thanx crampy,

I was concerned with OUTGOING mail, as was Nottinghamhelp. Sorry for the confusion. I am getting paperclips okay for the INCOMING mail...so far. In other words, I can see paperclips for OUTGOING mail going back to 2002, but they end at the end of June.

My mailboxes are all set up with a check in View > Columns > Attachments.

Yes, I see the 'Details' or 'Hide' (I have it on Details) but the little "Save, Quick Look" do not appear on messages where I'm sure I sent a picture, since June. (And were received) As Nottinghamhelp said, I have not got any paperclip, or that Save, Quick Look, in OUTGOING mail since June 26.

As To Prefs > Viewing...this does not correspond to my version of Mail. The items under Prefs > Viewing do not inclued anything about columns or attachments.

This is perplexing.

Your version of mail. Mac OSX 10.8, MtLion? Mail version 6.0 (1485) ???

Mail open, to sent mail, then open preferences>View and you do not get a drop down offering columns, sort by, organize by conversation, and a bunch of other stuff ending with Enter Full Screen ?

For me, I have to make settings for inbox, and sent, separately as well as my "on my mac" boxes, such as saved pics, business mail, shopping etc.

"viewing" is not one of the options in my menu at top of screen in mail. View is there... Are you both in britain?

I need to leave computer for an hour...

O Golly- I am sorry- I forgot about the switch in the interim...I upgraded the day after it came out I guess...I was only lion for a month then- my next previous computer being from 2003- so a lot of interimg things I missed, and presently, I forget lion even. I will stop interrupting you. All I can think of suggesting is one I have seen a lot: make a good back up and re-install? Be well. (or come to mt lion!)

I have this issue as well. On 10.8.2 with all updates, on all four of my Macs (2 Minis, one MBP, one MBPr), Mail does not show attachments to outgoing mail. I have set View -> Columns to include Attachments, and a column with a paper clip icon appears when I select any of my outgoing mailboxes. However, nothing appears in this column, even when inspection of an individual sent email shows attachments correctly. This is a pain in that it makes it necessary to view each email to see if it was sent with an attachment. Incoming mail shows all attachments correctly in all accounts.

One curious thing - display of outgoing attachments in the Attachments column was working for me up through May 21, 2012. That's the last date on which an outgoing mail with an attachment displays correctly in the Attachments column.

Others with this problem, can you look back through your outgoing email and find a time when the attachment display was working? If so, what's the latest date? Maybe an update broke this capability?
