AT&T Uverse + Airport Setup (3800HGV-B + Airport Extreme + Airport Express)

Hi all,

Just wanted to share my setup in the hopes it can assist others, maybe get advice if there's a better setup:

  1. Main router 2wire 3800HGV-B from AT&T
  2. Airport Extreme 2nd generation (gigabit + N, single-mode)
  3. Airport Express 3rd Gen (dual ethernet)

The Airport Extreme is plugged into the 2wire modem via ethernet.

  • Set to 5Ghz "N Only" mode
  • In the 2wire config I have this router set to DMZplus mode to allow unrestricted traffic

The Airport Express is in another part of the house and set to extend the Airport Extreme router.

The main discover is keeping the Extreme-Express connection at 5Ghz because of interference from other junk in the house. Before I made the change, connections off the Express would drop about 50% in bandwidth. After switching to 5GHz the bandwidth is nearly identical between the two routers.

To make things even more kosher you could disable the wifi radio in the 2wire unit. I kept it on, however, because I have a DirecTV Cinema Connection Kit (wifi) and that **** thing didn't want anything to do with Apple products, so it's the only thing connected to the 2wire radio.

Hope this helps, and if anyone has a simlar setup that works better I'd love to hear about it.

DirecTV will not connect to any wireless network with special characters in the network name like an apostrophe, exclamation mark, asterisk, etc.

DirecTV wants to see a wireless network name of 10-16 characters or so, no spaces, and only lower case letters or numbers.

If you have an apostrophe in the wireless network name of the Apple routers, that is your problem with the DirecTV.
