How can you make US iPhone work in Australia?

I've got a friend moving from the US to Melbourne, Australia, and she wants to use her iPhone here in Australia. Will a US iPhone take an Australian phone sim card and work? Does she have to do anything to unlock it?

"Will a US iPhone take an Australian phone sim card and work? "

If it is unlocked.

"Does she have to do anything to unlock it?"

If it is not unlocked then she would have to contact the carrier to which it is locked and see if they offer unlocking and if she qualifies.
