After updating to 3.3, library conversion was no problem, but I rebuilt the library today and its size increased from 125 GB to 173 GB. This is large enough to be discomforting. All masters (orginals, I guess, now) are referenced.

I have maintain previews off. For ones that I need (like to share with iPhone, Flickr, etc.), I generate them manually. I might try deleting all previews and see what happens to the library size.
I rebuilt because vault updates (for both exisiting and new vaults) were hanging.
OK - I think you nailed it. I deleted all previews - according to the activity window, there were as many previews as photos in the library. I deleted them all, and (maybe) the size dropped by about 50 GB. (I say "maybe" because there is a discrepancy between what shows in a Finder window, and what shows in Get Info.)
OK - I was wrong - I looked in Package Contents. Nearly all (presently 147/160 GB) of the library is in Thumbnails. Is there somewhere to control the size of Thumbnails as there is Previews?
