iTunes 10.6.3 not importing mp3 files but will play the mp3 files

Hi

I recently updated my iTunes to v10.6.3 on my mac. However, I cant seem to add new music to my iTunes library. Dropping and dragging doesnt work even though the '+' curser appears and importing music using command + O doesnt work either. There is no indication of the music being analysed or anything.

However, when I click on an mp3 file it opens and plays in iTunes but will not be added to the library. If I click on the mp3 file again from finder, it will play in iTunes from the last point..

Does anyone have any ideas of wrong? Its frustrating me because I need to sync music to my iPhone and I cant

Thanks

Mac OS X (10.6.8)

The exact same thing happened to me today

For no reason. I spent 1/2 hour on phone with

apple support but couldn't figure out.

I later tried to turn off Imatch and turn it on again

So it reviews my library again. Finally I am able rob

Import my mp3 files. I was glad to see that this had happens

To others just not my iMac. It must be a bug with

Imatch.

I decided to consolidate all of my music (~600 GB) onto one HD and make it all mp3 (some was AAC, some m4a, some mp3, etc.). Of course I can't use my Mac, because it won't convert m4a...but my work PC will. And I ran into the same problem as all of you! Each time I imported into my library, mp3 files would show up in iTunes but would not be available in my iTunes music folder - the only way to access them was if my HD (source) was still connected.

However, I found the fix: consolidate your library while still connected to the source of the music. In my case, what this means is that I import everything into iTunes (yes, 10.6.3) and then file > library > organize library > consolidate. Mind you, it takes a while if you are importing a lot of music.

Why convert it all?

Why use MP3?

Why not? Are you having an issue with this?

Is iTunes prefs - Advanced > Copy to iTunes media folder when adding to library checked?

And is the iTunes media folder on a drive that is always connected?

If the media is not available (it's on an external which is disconnected) it cannot play. It's not an iTunes issue. The files are simply not there.

If Copy to iTunes media folder... is checked, you won't need to consolidate as the files are already in teh iTunes media folder.

I am consolidating/converting because they are of different formats across different storage devices and I want them all to be in one place and in one format because I am ultimately lazy and want them to play on different things with minimal effort later.

I did not have that checked in the prefs - have now done so, and am thankful for your info (this will make the overall endeavor much easier).

Yes, the iTunes media folder is on an always-connected drive. But my problem was that, with settings as they were, mp3s were showing up in iTunes but not in the media folder (the pathway always pointed back to the external for mp3s, and would play them if connected, but I don't always have it connected). My (stupid, but workable, as you pointed out) fix was to consolidate afterward.

I have now checked Copy to iTunes... in the advanced prefs and expect that to work when I am initially adding, this saving an unnecessary step. Thanks for the help!

In the iTunes Media folder, there is an /Automatically add to iTunes/ folder.

I keep an alias/shortcut of this folder on the desktop.

Putting files into this folder will move them in the correct location in the iTunes media folder.

If you simlpy File > Add to library, it copies the files and the original will still be on the HD.

Can someone find a simple solution for this? There should not have to be a "workaround" for simply importing music into iTunes.

Ever since the last update mine has been horribly slow and freezing often when adding music. I have 200gb of music and update it constantly, not iTunes Match ever as I use a lot of remixes and different files I have to have for using Serato.

But recently when I try to import music it will either freeze and try to add Gapless Playback (even though that is turned off) to where I have to leave my computer on all night letting it sort. And as someone mentioned above - it will not add the music I drag and drop, or directly Add to Library, to the Music folder, only to individual playlists.

Please help. It's urgent!!!

This might not be the same for the rest of you, but I was having the same issue, until I discovered the the songs had, in fact, been imported as Podcasts. I went into the Podcast section, selected "Get Info" > Options > Media Kind and changed it from PodCast to Music. They're now all in my music playlist where they should be.

Hope this helps.
