If you're trying to erase a Time Machine backup, don't do it that way. Reformat the drive or partition containing it.

old time machine backup is in the trash and won't let me empty the trash.

not going to format the hard dirve.

    Then try Trash It!.

And if it doesn't work read: Solving Trash Problems

Trashit worked, although it didn't look like it was doing anything.

or the command option right error thing worked.

didn't check hard drive space to see difference.

    thanks all

I assume that if it is a TM backup it is pretty big.  That kind of a delete, even by Trash It! is going to take a while.

Does the trash can indicate it's empty?  If so, it is empty.

I had the same problem of not being able to empty my trash [Time Machine Backup Folders plus others from my hard drive] using Snow Leopard Mac OS.

I tried two empty trash softwares - Trash It! and Cocktail - and neither worked.

Then I learned about Onyx, and it worked fine.  I put it to work before I went to bed and let it run over night.  The next morning, there were a few items left [iWeb], but all my TM backup file were gone.  To get rid of the iWeb files, I did an option trash delete and they disappeared.

Onyx software rocks and is much more effective than either Trash It! or Cocktail.
