Q: Networking through Dial-up

Hi,

Even if a dial-up connection of this kind (over normal phone lines) were possible, it would be very slow. A better idea might be to directly use broadband Internet for remote networking/co-operation. Computers at home could be connected to the Internet via a normal router, through Wi-Fi or Ethernet. Mobile computers could be connected to the Internet via, for instance, an inexpensive mobile broadband hotspot with Wi-Fi capabilities (the ZTE MF60 is just one example). Remote access or server software can be added as necessary. The operating system versions involved may limit what can be done.

Is there a special reason for using dial-up?

Alternatively, if you need Wi-Fi for an older computer, there may be ways to achieve that as well. For example, some older PowerBook computers can be made to work with a wireless PC Card.

Almost any Ethernet-capable computer will work with a wireless Ethernet bridge (such as WNCE2001 or WET610N from Linksys; or an older model from these companies or Belkin or D-Link). Some PDAs can use a separate Wi-Fi card.
