A friend of mine gave her teenage son an Ipod Touch for his birthday, but has found out he is using it to download innapropriate material. I've had a look to see if there is a way to stop this or make a parental password for adult material, but can't find one. Please can you help me with a solution.

Do you mean he is accessing inappropriate material the web? I'm not sure how he would be downloading it, unless you were referring to apps with inappropriate material.

Thanks for your response. Yes I didnt mean downloading, just accessing. He needs to be able to access the internet, but we need to find a way to restrict adult material only and I think the restriction access to Safari, completely stops the user using the internet?
Yes. You can disable Safari and then download and install a Safe Browser that allows to you better control access to certain sites and material. Once such alternative browser is the one below.
