apple configurator can not update profile once passcode set

I have setup 31 iPad 2's using Apple Configurator with Apps, brilliant.

I have now put in a 4 digit passcode which is configured in the profile.

When I plug them back in the profile timesout!

Does anybody know why?

Configurator will remove the passcode from a supervised device when refreshing, but only if the device requires a passcode when the refresh starts. If the passcode is NOT required until the device has been locked for some amount of time, it's possible that the passcode will not be cleared, but profile installs will fail.

Try setting the 'Require Passcode' to 'Immediately' on the iOS device.

Thank you for your replys so far.

All ipads are already set to 'Require Passcode' - 'Immediately'.

At least once a term I need to refresh ipads as the students customise them and leave apps open etc. Is the best way to not have a passcode? Just worried about the security issue then. I also do not want to manually enter passcodes on 31 ipads

Is there a 'Best Practice' of setting 31 ipads up in a school?

I work in a hospital and have iPads assigned to providers. Because there are Apps (like 2X) that link to patient medical records the providers all have personal passcodes. But, we have them supervised so that they cannot install any App that they like (like Angrey Birds). When I update the Apps that we provide, the configurator essentially wipes them back to factory and deletes the passcode. So, during the time that the (required) passcode is blown away, the devices are unsecured. Apple really needs to think about the enterprise manageability of iOS. I now have v1.3 of Configurator, so maybe it's all better now....
