Kernel Panic Crash Report Reading Help?

Hi all.

Since updating to Lion the other day and plugging my Mac Pro into a CyberPower 1500 SineWave UPS battery backup, I've kernel paniced twice i the last 2 days including just this morning. Can anyone read the resulting crash reports after I restarted. I can't, but notice that the opening lines seem quite similar regarding the panic. Any help deciphering will be much appreciated. In the first panic it seemed that my video card (original) was involved, but in this morning's panic the card isn't referred to, or at least at all like in the first report from this past Saturday:

That is the Firmware-related kernel panic some users get when upgrading to quad processors on the Mac Pro 1,1.

Time for the Firmware update readers referred to in your earlier posts.

Why did you install software for the CyberPower? Is it Lion 10.7.4 compliant? some drivers were 10.7.3 and you get into hardware sometimes having to wait for new driver before plunging in and applying OS updates or programs.

I have the CyberPower, nice unit, looks nice, and hope it protects modem and router next time!

Quad as in two dual-core (4 total, not 8) "5160" Xeon processors.

MacPro2,1 was intro in March 2007 with first 8-core 3.0GHz

Grant,

I'm totally confused by your post. In reviewing previous post that you refrer to, Hatter asks if I have updated:

You need to apply the 2.1 EFI firmware - done that? netkas.org register there to have access."

In regard to my processor saying "unknown"

to which you replied when I said, "How come Apple never told me about this upgrade"

Apple says there is no upgrades for your computer.

Please explain?

Jun 20, 2012 2:08 PM in response to Steven Shmerler

If you never swapped out and upgraded the processor from stock OEM as shipped by Apple, ignore.

A LOT of people DO and then they do have to apply a firmware update.

Upgrading processors is not in Apple's cards.

So obviously you have the symptoms of a processor upgrade, wth the panics and "unknown" but for a different reason.

Try Safe Boot.

Clone the system for testing. And then remove and uninstall 3rd party extensons, like from CybperPower, and see how it performs then.

Carbon Copy Cloner - www.macupdate.com to get your started and format a drive or large enough partition to hold the system (you can safely copy the system and ignore the large sub folders in your home user account like Music, Pictures, Video Documents and keep your own Library under /Users/myaccount/

Grant... I just spoke to ApppleCare who tells me that since my computer is stock and I never upgraded the processor which you refer to, but I don't know why since I never did, he checked my Boot ROM version:

MP11.005D.B00

And tells me that the version for my computer is

MP11.005C

and thus I am running the latest for this configuration. But you seem very sincere about me updating, but then again keep referring to doing the firmware upgrade when you upgrade the processor from MacPro1,1 to MacPro2,1 which is NOT the case here. Here's my Overview:

Hardware Overview:

Model Name: Mac Pro

Model Identifier: MacPro1,1

Processor Speed: 3 GHz

Number of Processors: 2

Total Number of Cores: 8

L2 Cache (per Processor): 8 MB

Memory: 8 GB

Bus Speed: 1.33 GHz

Boot ROM Version: MP11.005D.B00

SMC Version (system): 1.7f10

Serial Number (system):

Hardware UUID: 00000000-0000-1000-8000-0017F2105558

Could you help me and explain why I need to update the firmware and where to find it?

I just did a Software Update and there was no mention of a firmware upgrade. Which is why earlier, I said: "How come Apple never mentioned a firmware upgrade before to me?"

Really looking forward to your insight here and if I have to upgrade, where to find it.

Thanks, Steven

Hatter (and Grant).

I never installed any sofware for the UPS system. I seemed to have mislead you. They told me there is no software for it from them and that you simply plug their UPS USB from their battery to your computer and then use Sys Pref > Energy Saver > UPS to set when you want your computer to shut down after the UPS kicks in after a power outage.

Why do you think I installed CyberPower sofware? I didn't.

Also to Grant: in checking further into the EFI updating that Hatter referred to earlier, on Apple's site I find this:

Computer Model identifier EFI Boot ROM version SMC version
Mac Pro (Original) MacPro1,1 MP11.005C.B08 (EFI 1.2) 1.7f10 (SMC 1.1)

So since my Boot ROM Version is: MP11.005D.B00, I seem to be ahead of the game?

I did have my motherboard replace by Apple when it failed a year ago which is why the ROM version is different?

Is it a problem that I don't have the same as what was stock?

THIS:

Model Identifier: MacPro1,1

Processor Speed: 3 GHz

Number of Processors: 2

Total Number of Cores: 8

Is standard for a "2,1" and not for 1,1

You have 8 cores, which means 2,1

If it came from Apple this way....

When did the panic start? why? what changed? what did you do if anything? add the software for a UPS, plug in the UPS? apply 10.7.4? what?

I guess you keep asking for Grant so I'll leave you two and bug out.

Jun 20, 2012 2:58 PM in response to The hatter

Ah... I bought this Mac from a dear friend who always maxes out his Macs and ordered it the way you see it. Then a year ago I had some panics and the Apple Store in LA where I lived said I needed a new motherboard and replaced it which is when the later firmware had to have been applied as no firmware was ever issued for this computer, or what I thought was a MacPro1,1.

So is it possible... that my friend customized my Mac Pro from Apple, and when the Apple Store replaced my motherboard they put in the wrong firmware? Firmware for MacPro1,1, but what I really have is a beefed up Mac to MacPro2,1 so I seem to have MacPro1,1 firmware in a MacPro2,1 machine?

Please don't "bug out" Im just trying to reply to both your comments...

In Feb 2012, I had 5 random restarts, and then 2 panics and opened a case with AppleCare to look into it. They concluded that the USB PCI Express card I had or CyperPower UPS were the problem and to pull the card and unplug my Mac Pro from the UPS which I did.

The card was a Sonnets 4 port USB PCI Express and they took it back and I'm waiting for a replacement. CyberPower also took back their backup and sent me a new one and upgraded me from a 1350 Sine Wave to a 1500 Sine Wave.

Without the USB card or UPS backup, things seemed to calm down.

So then I upgraded to Lion and iCloud.

Then the UPS arrived and I plugged my computer into it, but again, NO software.

Since upgrading to Lion and adding the UPS, I paniced Sat and this morning.

Last big of info: back in Feb, AppleCare thought the issue might be my Video Card (stock, original) but then didn't mention it again, but does this panic seem to imply the video card might be involved? This was my first panic this past Saturday since upgrading to Lion and plugging into the UPS again:

threads realky do serm to go "backward" or "20 questions" to flush out background detail.

regardless your new mobo needs 2.1 firmware (reapplied) it seems.

also, the OEM 7300GT + Lion - might want amother GPU

Me: never upgrade to new OS, clean install and Setup Assistant does a nicer job and less holdover old software to cause trouble

Sonnet is good too, might have new driber though fot 10.7.4

Jun 20, 2012 4:04 PM in response to The hatter

Hey guys. I really appreciate your help.

Not to pit any one against anyone, I called Apple because I am concerned that an Apple Store deemed that my issues were related to a failing motherboard which cost a pretty penny to replace. Yet I still have issues.

I got on with a senior tech to clarify if I have a MP1 or MP2 and how could my About this Mac also say I have 8 cores and then why did the Apple Store not install the MP2 firmware and install MP1 firmware.

The tech had me look at this page to see if my MP looked like it and it doesn't:

http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2808

He said this is an 8 core MP2 which followed my MP's production. I repeated that my friend ordered the first version of the MP with the 8 core option from Apple, which you guys are loudly saying makes it a MP2 and which Apple, thus far, are seeming to take the position that it is still a MP1 and the upgrade doesn't make it a MP2 and thus the firmware is right.

So I'm totally stumped. I have to run to meet a friend for dinner and when I get back, I plan on taking Apple to task as I've spent untold hours on this not to mention replacing a motherboard and sending all kinds of parts back to their manufactuer. The time I've spent is unbelievable. And I'm still having panics!

I'd love to hear your comments on how Apple could take the position I have a MP1 and that while I have 8 cores, it makes no diff, it's still a MP1 and that when I brought the MP to the Apple Store they HAD TO replace "like with like" as he put it regarding the motherboard.

Thoughts?

Back after dinner. If I can eat. this has all made me nautious 😟

Jun 20, 2012 4:48 PM in response to Steven Shmerler

Let me shout out to your friend, you should have talked to him, esp before or during logicboard issue.

Apple does not warrant, support processor upgrades.

You should have known that up front.

What you need is the actual processor ID and are these 5365 and Intel part, batch, stepping

a great thread on MacRumors on maximum cpu upgrades, there is one or two here on cpu upgrade for a 1,1

I get the felling you don't see this in same context I do.
