Setting up GMail as Exchange is a far better method because:

1- Contacts synchronize on the fly between your device and GMail, without even needing to re-sync to iTunes.

2- Push notification for e-mail becomes a feature.

The only caveat is that when GMail is set up as Exchange, when you delete a message it actually gets archived into your "All Mail" category (even though the button says Delete). The only way to change this behavior is to use your device's Safari to navigate to m.google.com/sync and change the setting to send deleted messages to Trash. You can still archive messages if you want, just move them to "All Mail" as you would any GMail folder.
