Change color of desktop

How do I change the color on my desktop? I have Snow Leopard, latest version.

I had messed things up and somehow accidentally changed the color of the desktop to a light blue, from the darker background I had previously.

Someone at Apple said to right click my mouse on the desktop and it would give me options to change the color. But nothing happens at all when I right click the mouse on the desktop. I get no options, and no menu. Same with left clicking the mouse on the desktop.

Then why ask in a Pages forum, and leave us thinking it is relevent to the forum?

I am running OSX 10.6.8 and right clicking on the Finder Desktop gives me the option of Change Desktop Background… > Desktop & Screen Saver > Solid Colors > Chhose one

Maybe you do not have right clicking set up in your Mouse Preferences.

All of this is in your System Preferences under the Apple Menu.

" Desktop & Screen Saver > Solid Colors > Choose one".

That worked! It changed my desktop from light blue back to the dark blue I originally had and wanted again.

I went ito Apple/System Peferences and clicked on solid colors. Nothing happened after I clicked on "Solid Colors". No menu came up, and no "Choose One" menu came up - so I couldn't choose a color. But for some reason it worked anyway.

Just curious, what if I wanted a different color besides blue - no menu of colors came up, so how would I change it?

Sorry, I didn't realize I had put this in the "Pages" forum - my mistake. Thanks for the help.

Hi Henry,

This is what i get with In OS X v10.4.11 System Preferences > Desktop & Screen Saver > Desktop > Solid Colors:

User uploaded file

v10.5.8 offers the same set, plus a pale lilac purple and two more shades of grey.

If you want a colour that's not offered, adding a colour is pretty simple. In Pages:

  • Open a new Blank Canvas (landscape) document.
  • Insert a rectangle shape.
  • With the shape selected,
  • Click the Fill color well and choose the colour you want for the desktop. (Use the color picker, if the palette does not contain the colour you want).
  • Click the Stroke type button in the format bar and choose none.
  • Resize the shape to make it larger, and approximately the same shape as your screen.
  • Copy/

  • Launch Preview.
  • Press command-N to make a New document from the clipboard.
  • Name the new document, and Save it (as a pdf or a jpeg) to yourname > Pictures > Desktop Pictures

  • Open System Preferences
  • Click Desktop and Screen Saver > Desktop
  • Click desktop Pictures in the list, then click your new shape in the window to the right.
  • Click the pop-up menu near the top of the Preferences pane and choose Fill Screen.

The solid colour image will fill the desktop as below:

Hmmm... Wouldn't be my choice of Desktop colour. I think I'll go back to the pictures.

If your thoughts of your new colour are the same, choose another picture, or go back to the Solid Color choice, then go to the Finder, navigate to the Desktop Pictures folder, Delete the new file, and try again.

Barry

I still don't get any kind of menu if I click on "solid colors". I don't get the menu of colors on the right side that you

show in the first of your screens above. As a matter of fact, I get no menu if I click on anything - on Desktop Pictures, on Nature, on Plants, on Art, on Black & White, on Abstract, on Patterns, or on Solid Colors. Nothing shows up on the right side of the "desktop & Screen Saver" box. I wonder why.

I have Mac OS X 10.6.8 Snow Leopard.

No menu came up, and no "Choose One" menu came up - so I couldn't choose a color. But for some reason it worked anyway.

There is no "Choose One" menu. He literally meant choose a color. That's like the old "press any key" and having people ask you where the "any" key is on the keyboard.

All of your choices are blank (Desktop Pictures, on Nature, on Plants, on Art, on Black & White, on Abstract, on Patterns, or on Solid Colors), which is normally an indication that you, or someone else emptied out the contents of this folder:

/Library/Desktop Pictures/

You can restore the folders and files that are supposed to be in there by copying them from another Mac running Snow Leopard, retrieve them from a backup, or extract them from the original DVDs the Mac came with using Pacifist.

You're right Kurt. It looks like I accidentally had removed the "Desktop Pictures" folder and moved it to my Documents folder. I can click on the "Desktop Pictures" folder in Documents, and a list comes up of different colors and patterns. But I don't know how to restore this to the way it was before. How can I move this "Desktop Pictures" folder to where it belongs? Please advise in detail, step by step, if possible. Thanks.

It looks like I accidentally had removed the "Desktop Pictures" folder and moved it to my Documents folder.

Simple fix.

1. Open the main Library folder ( whatever the name of the boot drive is on your desktop > Library)

2. Open the Documents folder in your user account.

3. Drag and drop the Desktop Pictures folder into the Library folder. The system will likely ask for an admin password before it will allow the move to finish. Enter that and click OK.

3a. The system may have created a new empty folder of the same name to replace the one you moved. If so, then copy or move the contents of the Desktop Pictures folder in your user account to the one in the Library.

That should do it.
