Not able to update iTunes to 10.6.3

I have HP Pavilion dv5 notebook with Windows 7 home 64 bit premium OS. When I "check for updates" under iTunes the following message appears.User uploaded file

However nothing happens! that is no update takes place.

Last week I had problem with Windows Update, which I was able to troubleshoot. I don't know if the two seeminly separate issues are related😕

Looking at some of the similar threads, I am not so sure re-install will help. Your constructive suggestions are very welcome.

With that one, try updating using an iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64Setup.exe) downloaded from the Apple website:

http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/

Does that go through any better for you?

There are a whole bunch of threads of people reporting the same update problem on Windows, but I didn't see a statement from Apple acknowledging awareness of the problem. Presumably Apple tests updates on Windows, but didn't test the conditions that trigger this problem, though I'm using Windows 7 and updating from 10.6.1.7 so I don't have an obviously unusual configuration.

My impression is that Apple wouldn't announce a problem even if it knew that one existed and knew what had gone wrong. Most likely they would just fix the problem in the next version. Is there anything of particular importance in this version to make it so we should upgrade manually a b noir suggests rather than just waiting until Apple fixes this in the next update?

Good point. Knowing the details might be of some help for folks with making a decision (one way or another).

From the release notes for 10.6.3.25:

iTunes 10.6.3 includes support for OS X Mountain Lion and addresses a number of important issues:

  • Addresses a problem where iTunes may become unresponsive when syncing an iPad (1st generation) that contains an iBooks textbook
  • Fixes a problem where photos synced to a device may appear in an unexpected order
  • Resolves an issue where iTunes may unexpectedly delete playlists created on a device
  • Fixes issues where iTunes may unexpectedly delete apps on a device
  • Improves overall performance

For the security update info about the update, see:

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5318

If you've got Safari 5.1.7 installed, the CVE-2012-0672 vulnerability is already blocked, as per:

re. the anything of importance thing ... itunes 10.6.3 is required to be able to update a 3rd gen itouch from ios 3.2 to 5.1, at least that's what itunes 10.0.0 tells me when i try ... it does give me the option to update to 10.6.3, but that fails in the same way as described in this post ... have also tried running the apple updater as admin, that doesn't help ... any ideas?

2- After downloading is finished, i just double clicked the file and it began with installation

3- When installation is done, i opened itunes it was updated. I lost nothing of my data.
