Where have my pictures gone?

Hello,

My mother's pictures seem to have disappeared. I'm running Mac OS10.6.8, with Iphoto 09, 8.1.2. My mother (this is her computer) transfered about 50 pictures to a file on her desktop so she could copy them on to her Ipad for a trip to Europe. I connected the Ipad, used Itunes to transfer them successfully. Now, when I open Iphoto, it no longer opens up the window with all the pictures/events/etc. Also, going to the Iphoto library on the hard drive opens up Iphoto, but again with no pictures. In Iphoto, most of the menus are greyed out.

I hope the pictures have not gone away.

What does open?

As a first guess at a solution make a temporary, backup copy (select the library and type Command+D) and apply the two fixes below in order as needed:

Fix #1

Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.

Select the options identified in the screenshot.

Fix #2

Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library

Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.

Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.

Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option

In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.

Click on the Create button.

Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

Ok, I did that. But I still can't oopen up the pictures in Iphoto.

It took some time, and seemed to be doing something. I now have a file called Iphoto (rebuilt) 2 on my desktop. I thought maybe I could simply import that into Iphoto, but it won't allow me to choose that file. I have a file that my mom prepared for her trip to Europe called "photos for Europe" that iphoto will allow me to import. It then asks about whether it should import duplicates. So the pictures are there, somewhere.
