My iPhone 4 internal speaker isn't working. It worked just fine around 2-3 in the morning then 16-17 hours later, I can't hear anything when people call or I call them, even when I check my voicemail. Only way I can hear is if I put it on speaker or use headphones. I've tried cleaning out the headphone jack and have gotten no luck.

did you do a hard reset by holding down the home key and sleep/wake key? After that, make sure that your not on silent. To find out if you are on silet look on the side of the phone for a sliding switch. If it is orange, slide it so the orange goes away. Also, go to settings and sounds. Then make sure the blue bar is all the way to the right/up. Hope this helps. If it does, please rate it up/ say it solved the question. Thanks!
I have the same issue as Tasia7793. I tried your reccomendation, but it didn't work. Do you have another suggestion? I've had the phone for over a year and never had any issues. My phone worked this morning and then this afternoon - I can't hear anything when I make a call, unless I use the speaker phone. Hope you can help!
This thread concerns IOS 5.1.1. update and the subsequent loss of volume button functionality and use of internal speakers.

It's not a jailbreak phone. only purchased in early April on O2. Updated to 5.1.1. yesterday morning and now the volume buttons are virtually redundant!. Here are the symptoms;
May be this problem arose due to updating your iphone to ios 5.1.1 and none of the method described by above people work for me( cleaning with brush..) hope this is due to updating the iphone ...hope new upadte will be available soon..........but i m not sure..

Was your issue resolved? I'm having the exact same problem with my iPhone 4S. My phone has the same symptoms as you've described- cannot get audio through internal speaker, external speaker and ear phones work.
hello i have just up-dated my iphone 4 to ios6 and lost the exact same volume control and sound but my network do not know how to resolve the issue its only 4 wks old any clues ???
Yes, my problem was solved. All that was done was my step-father ha an air compressor and blew it in to the top speaker.

Same issue after upgrading to IOS 6.1.2. Took my phone to the Apple store and their "genius" opinion was, "Gee, that's too bad. Buy a new one." So, no help there. Obviously a bug in the update but frustrating as ****. Any ideas???
I am having the same problem. My 4S is 8 months old and until the 6.1.2 update, I never had any issues at all.
My internal speaker doesn't work AT ALL. Hopefully they will update the update soon! I don't suppose there is any way to "un" install the ios update?
Same problem! At least I think so. My speaker won't work so my phone won't ring, music won't play, can't hear calls on speaker, etc. Basically, the speaker won't work AT ALL! Did anyone find out if we can uninstall the update? I had to turn my phone to vibrate when ringing just to know when someone calls. Maybe this isn't the same thing, but I still need help! And it's not on silent and I restarted it and I've checked everything I can think of.
Upgraded to OS 6.1.3 hoping this would take care of it, but sadly no. Apple apparently doesn't care. Anyone made any progress? This is ridiculous...
I spent hours on the phone with someone at apple. He tried everything to get the speaker to work. Eventually, he decided it was a "firmware" issue and made me an appt at the closest apple store. I spent 10 minutes with their apple genius and he replaced my phone free of charge. I came home and plugged in to my itunes account and my new phone was restored (loaded with all of my personal info/games/settings). I had to drive an hour to the closest store and spent probably 3 hrs on the phone with the tech. I guess in the end it was worth trying. Good luck everyone!

My external speaker stopped working after an update, then after the last update (6.1.3) it started working again and now works fine. May others be so lucky.
Tried reset and restore but it did not work. Then I checked Bluetooth and there was a phantom audio device listed. I did not think anything of it because BT was turned off. When I told the phone to forget the device, my daughters phone would play music again.
