When I try to open my magazine subscriptions now the screen goes right back to the newstand app and won't let me open the subscription. It was working alright, but don't know why it is not working now. Haven't changed any settings since it worked last.

Deleting the magazine apps, resetting & reinstalling has not fixed the problem. Once i reopen the magazine app it will open to the first page immediately crash back to Newsstand & then will not open again. One magazine will reopen after this crash, but when i press on an issue in the library to open nothing happens.
is there a resolution to this yet? It seems that Apple hasnt addressed the issue on here! I am now having this issue since updating my iPad to iOS 8 from 7. I need to get into those magazines ASAP too.
Try resetting the device. Hold down the home and sleep keys, past the red power down slider, until you see the silver apple. Let it reboot and try again. This often fixes many glitches.
If that doesn't work, then delete the app, reset the iPad, and reinstall the app.
