The USB to SATA adapter is only useful for SATA drives with their own power that are external.
If your MacBook is not one with Firewire, you can choose to use ethernet to transfer data with the Migration Assistant.
https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2502 will help you see if you do have Firewire.
