This was the final update of Java for PPC Macs running Leopard:
Update 10, 29 June 2011 - This release updates J2SE 5.0 to 1.5.0_30, and updates Java SE 6 to 1.6.0_26. J2SE 1.4.2 is no longer being updated to fix bugs or security issues and remains disabled by default in this update. Support for out-of-process Java applets on Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard has been removed with this update.
This release is only for Mac OS X 10.5.8 or later versions of Mac OS X 10.5. http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1359
I have now manually upgraded to Firefox 3.6.28 since the normal update did not work for me - perhaps because I recently returned from TenFourFox which shares the same preferences. The Java clock on http://links.zero.eu.org/time/ still works for me.
For others, all Firefox releases are here: ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/firefox/releases/
At no time has my Firefox said the same as John's ie:

Has anybody else had the above message?
I see that update 10 says:
From: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1359
About Java for Mac OS X 10.5 Update 10
Java for Mac OS X 10.5 Update 10 delivers improved compatibility, security, and reliability by updating J2SE 5.0 to 1.5.0_30, and updating Java SE 6 to 1.6.0_26 for 64-bit capable Intel-based Macs.
J2SE 1.4.2 is no longer being updated to fix bugs or security issues and remains disabled by default in this update.
Can anybody explain the meaning of the last sentence in relation to PPC? Would 1.4.2 normally be replaced by 1.5.0 or would they normally both be active?
I saw elsewhere that when Apple disable some Java items they provide a means to re-enable them although there is a timer which automatically disables after a period of non-use.
This should work to reenable a Java version if the plug-in has been disabled by Mozilla.
- Open new Tab
- Navigate to about:config
- Accept security warning
- Change extensions.blocklist.enabled to false
- Restart browser
This prevents firefox from checking the blocklist you have configured at extensions.blocklist.detailsURL
My system and software:
PowerPC G5, OS X 10.5.8
java version "1.5.0_30"
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.5.0_30-b03-389-9M3425)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.5.0_30-161, mixed mode, sharing)
Apple Software Update shows everything current.
Firefox 3.6.28:
For your safety, Firefox has disabled your outdated version of Java. Please upgrade to the latest version.
---------------------------------------------------------
I have searched believe there are no options to upgrade Java with 10.5.8 and I cannot upgrade 10.5.8 with a PowerPC processor.
Is it correct that I am at the end of the line for my G5 and I will not be able to properly access web pages that require Java?
I have OS X 10.5.8 on a 733 MHz G4+.
My Firefox version is 3.6.27 and it says there are no updates.
My Terminal states:
$ java -version
java version "1.5.0_30"
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.5.0_30-b03-389-9M3425)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.5.0_30-161, mixed mode, sharing)
I do not recall anything about Java being disabled.
Here is a Java test for you: http://links.zero.eu.org/time/
This is a page on my server. The bottom right time uses Java so if you see an updating clock at bottom right your Java is working. My Safari and Firefox both display this clock.
For interest: The top right clock uses JavaScript devised by myself - it is a more accurate presentation of your computer clock than I have seen on other web pages - see source code for details.
I do not recall anything about Java being disabled.
Apple issued a rare 10.5.8 Security fix for FlashBack Trojan that turned off Java in Browsers... BUT it was only for IntelMacs running 10.5.8, not our PPC Macs.
> Is it correct that I am at the end of the line for my G5 and I will not be able to properly access web pages that require Java?
I would expect web pages to be backward compatible to Java 1.5.0 for some time to come. I do recommend you still disable Java in your browser except when you need it for a specific site session. Although I am unaware of any Java delivered malware that will run on a PPC today, tomorrow something could pop-up.
Would 1.4.2 normally be replaced by 1.5.0 or would they normally both be active?
Both would be/are available, look in Utilities for Java Preferences App
I saw elsewhere that when Apple disable some Java items they provide a means to re-enable them although there is a timer which automatically disables after a period of non-use.
Definitly only IntelMacs, & possibly only 10.6.8 & up.

Never and I've been using 3.6.28 since the day it was released.

They are both installed but 1.4.2 defaults to disabled. It is possible to have both be active and allow the applet to pick the one it needs. It's left their for backward compatability with older Applets.

I believe that the timer only applies to Lion.
Hello, sorry, we're dependent on Apple for any Java Updates, & there'll be no more for 10.4, 10.5, or 10.6.
If Java doesn't show in SW Update, then you have the latest version for 10.5.8 already.
Correct, our G5s are at the end of the line.
Thanks for the information but I was replying to a PPC user who said Firefox v 3.6.28 disabled his Java - perhaps I am lucky in that my Firefox does not want to update beyond 3.6.27 - strange!
