In iPod's About menu, the hard disk size is reported as slightly less than the technical specifications for the iPod. The same is true if you connect iPod to your computer in disk mode look at the info or properties window for the disk.

Why the difference? Most hard disk manufacturers measure disk size this way: 1 MB = 1 million bytes (1000 * 1000). A 4 GB disk, therefore, is one that holds 4 billion bytes. Computers, including Windows computers, Macintosh computers and iPod, measure disk size this way: 1 MB = 1 048 576 bytes (1024 * 1024). The difference in these two calculations is what causes the drive to appear as 3.7 GB on a computer, but actually be a 4 billion byte disk.

For more, see this article: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60955 You also need to remember that some space on your iPod is already taken up by the operating system.

For example, CD files are in a format called AIFF, a typical 3 minute song will be about 30MB give or take. The default iTunes importing format is AAC (MP4) the same 3 minute song in this format will be about 3MB. Smaller the song file, the more songs you get on your iPod. You can learn more about formats, size, quality etc. in these articles:

in itunes, go to edit, preferences, advanced tab, imoporting tab, then change the format and bit rate, mine is at 128kpbs and AAC and i still have a lot of room, mine is four gigabytes but thats the best for quality and space.

Just to summarise your thread.
If you connect your iPod and then click on it in the iTunes source list, the bar at the bottom of the pane shows you how much space on the iPod you have used and what is left.
The quickest way to see the format of your tracks is to add the Kind column to your Library view. To do this right click at the top of any column and from the list choose Kind, you might also want Bit rate and Size.
CD format tracks will show up as AIFF audio, others you may have imported in compressed format may be AAC audio (MP4) and MPEG audio (MP3)
