Question

wanted: photo studio or something like it

I have been using PhotoStudio on my eMac. Now that I have a Mini running Lion, my old programs won't work. So I'd love suggetions on what program (Hopefully free!) I should get. My old version of PhotoStudio was free, I think. Anyway, Gimp is just way too complex for what I need. I need to scan and clean up (lighten, darken, etc.) the images I scan. PhotoDeluxe would probably work too, I guess, but I had trouble downloading it, and I don't know how much it costs.

You could just use Preview. Use it's Tools menu and click Adjust Color. You can adjust brightness, saturation, exposure, etc. Hope this helps.

On my eMac, I found that Preview was very limited. Have they improved it much?

Well, you can also adjust gamma, sharpness, and contrast. I use it for basic stuff but for more involved things I use Gimp.

iPhoto works great for what you want to do, plus it easy to use and keeps your photos organized.

I don't see how I can scan an item and then edit it in iPhoto. I wasn't able to import a scanned item into iPhoto. I'm hoping to find an application that can both scan and then manipulate the scanned image.

Ah. Well, you can start your scanner and open Image Capture in Applications, which will accept the scanned image and then allow you to export it to iPhoto for editing. Here's a how-to:
