What can I do to keep my Mac running at peek performance?

Leave the OS to look after itself (don't try to defrag or anything).

Don't let your boot disk get too full (absolute minimum of 10% free).

Verify disks with Disk Utility about once a month.

Stay away from dubious websites.

Keep a backup of all your stuff (and ideally a second backup offsite in case of fire or theft).
