Let's try a standalone Apple Mobile Device Support install. It still might not install, but fingers crossed any error messages will give us a better idea of the underlying cause of why it's not installing under normal conditions.

Download and save a copy of the iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64setup.exe) installer file to your hard drive:

http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/

Download and install the free trial version of WinRAR:

http://www.rarlab.com/

Right-click the iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64setup.exe), and select "Extract to iTunesSetup" (or "Extract to iTunes64Setup"). WinRAR will expand the contents of the file into a folder called "iTunesSetup" (or "iTunes64Setup").

Go into the folder and doubleclick the AppleMobileDeviceSupport.msi (or AppleMobileDeviceSupport64.msi) to do a standalone AMDS install.

(If it offers you the choice to remove or repair, choose "Remove", and if the uninstall goes through successfully, see if you can reinstall by doubleclicking the AppleMobileDeviceSupport.msi again.)

Does it install (or uninstall and then reinstall) properly for you? If so, can you get a normal iTunes install to go through properly now?

If instead you get an error message during the install (or uninstall), let us know what it says. (Precise text, please.)

Hi b noir

I will reply for Kristi827, as my problem is the same as hers, have done everything you have suggested and no luck.

I was not offered any choice to remove or repair it went straight into the install. started to install then it "rolled back" and the installer went to error with the wording:

Apple Mobile Device support wasn't installed on your computer. The installer encountered errors before apple mobile device support could be configured.

Your system has not been modified. To retry these operations at a later time, please run the installer again.

Click finish to exit the installer.

have tried this numerous times, everything else has installed from the original update except AMDS. Have completely unstalled and reinstalled numerous time without success. Any other idea's ?

I've found that if I just let it sit for a while, it will finally be ok to use. I still don't seem to have Apple Mobile Device installed, but it will eventually work, I guess I just wasn't being patient enough! My CPU usage is back to a normal level, it's updated my podcasts, and I was able to purchase something, so I am happy at the moent-that could change tomorrow!

I had this same problem with Vista for about a year - iTunes could not see my iphone or ipod because of an Apple Mobile Device driver problem. Tried the uninstall / install many, many times with no luck.

Finally fixed it by doing the clean uninstall of iTunes and then running all Windows updates (from the control panel). After all that, rebooted and reinstalled the latest iTunes, now my device shows up!! Finally...

I have had this problem with Windows 7 and iTunes updates for some time. Each time it takes hours to solve but with the over the air upgrade to IOS6 on my iPhone and iPad, I was determined to solve and remember what I did, So here it is:
