We both removed the iPhone from our lists, turned it off and on again ... but it still comes up as offline or location not available. Tried apps on the iPad, website on Mac ... any ideas?

Thanks, of course we already read that article and tried the solution (Previously-owned device appears in Find My iPhone).
I should add that I completely wiped the phone and set it up in iTunes as my device after I bought it a few months ago. But my friend kept it in his find-my-iPhone-list and I guess now iCloud may be confused? In the meantime he removed this iPhone from his list and it shows up on my list sometimes as disconnected sometimes with “no location”.
I should add now that a phone call to Apple support and them doing some stuff server side solved the problem back then.
Bought used iPhone from a friend, “Find my iPhone” doesn't work.
