I realize this is a completely stupid question, but I can't figure it out! I think some files are hidden, and one I'm looking for is in the User/Library folder...which isn't there.

Go to the finder, select go while holding the option key down. Select library in the submenu. A finder window will open in your user library. Drag library at the top of the window to the sidebar for easy access later.
It's hidden in lion.
